Bumper year for Blackberries !

Post by Richard »

Gosh I've never seen so many around the Lane and Ashford in general - maybe a little earlier than usual as well.

Is this the same in your areas ?

Richard

PS. The Blackbirds will do well :-D :-D

The blackbirds enjoyed my blackcurrants after I'd picked my fill

No time to pick brambles, the Czar plums are ripe (and haven't rotted while I was in Scotland for a week), the Victorias also need attention - some are going bad, so I need them off before they spoil the rest, and the insects think that some are ripe - just having a sit-down before going to stew the religious ones I've just picked.

Not had chance to look for blackberries tbh. We did let the brambles grow on the hedge round one side of our garden though +pinn+ just to see how many we would get you understand.

Glad to read that. Best not to tidy them up too much before Autumn / Winter, the birds will find bits and bobs on them through the cold months.

We usually have a great harvest from the wild ones in the hedgerow at the bottom of our allotment but the farmer went a bit too happy with his tractor pruning thingy (!!) so won't get many this year!! On the plus side, Hubby harvested a big tub full from the hedge at work yesterday! So we will be ok to make Blackberry & Apple jelly in a few weeks!

I bought some apples and blackberries the other day to make pies with.
At our last house we had 3 Bramley trees and my freezer was always full of apples and made up pies, but have just eaten the last pie.

Just been and had a quick scout to check the blackberries by us. Just over a kilo in 10 minutes or so picking.
Just checked Mysupermarket and T*sco B'berries are about a quid for 100g! So an £11 saving :P I just couldn't bring myself to buy any, knowing they grow everywhere for free.

Need to check further up the lane for apples. Another day though.
