Broody hen put to good useBroody hen put to good useOne of my hens is almost constantly broody, so I decided to put her to good use, and gave her a separate house/run and some Pekin Bantam eggs from a friend.
She hatched 5 earlier this week, and they all seem to be going well so far
Re: Broody hen put to good usevery sweet, I love watching a hen raising chickies, much nicer than hatching with an incubator I think. Perhaps you could start a diary here so we can watch them growing up.

Re: Broody hen put to good useThat video is wonderful - they are so cute and "mother" looks like she is doing a really good job. How nice to raise your own chicks - I hope they all do really well.
Re: Broody hen put to good useLovely video

Now that's cruel. No chicks of her own and has to watch someone else's Dance caller. http://mo-dance-caller.blogspot.co.uk/p/what-i-do.html
Sunny Clucker enjoyed Folk music and song in mid-Cheshire Re: Broody hen put to good useThey're about 5 and a half months old now, and almost as big as their 'mum'
They're still in the same run for now, although we've all moved house since then, and the hybrids have a new run that I've just finished building

Re: Broody hen put to good usegorgeous! It was a super friendly lavender pekin cockerel on a holiday that first made us think about getting our own chooks. Are you keeping the 2 boys?

--Immanuel Kant Re: Broody hen put to good useSo far no plans for the boys - or the girls!! If any friends were wanting them they could take all 5. It was good fun raising them and I might do more this year.
Found this old video. For future reference, 1" weldmesh is too big for young chicks. I added a couple of boards along the bottom right after that Re: Broody hen put to good useOh, how sweet. Love that they're in the frying pan

I have a lot of broody's always popping out from under the hedges and I've used broody's to raise turkey poults because turkey mums are rubbish. ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)✰
