Countryfile

Post by sandy »

Did anyone see it last sunday? They have an annual hen race every year somewhere I have forgotten, three hens entered, a black rock, a Wiggy Woo and a brown hen didnt know what breed. Bless they all sttod about then pecked at the ground at first while their supporters were shouting at them. I may enter next year, I know I will win because I will take a bag of mealworms along with me {rofwl}

last weeks episode had a free range farm with all white hens, cheaper to look after foodwise, sturdy girls so all looked very well but they lay white eggs so farmer sells majority of eggs to be added to foodstuffs aas we still think brown eggs are best

There was a time when people preferred white eggs (cleaner), then started thinking that brown were more natural so that became fashionable, so the factory farmers jumped aboard.
But a good sign that there is now a market for free range eggs as ingredients. Not so long ago (well OK maybe 18 yrs) it was hard to find a free range egg in the supermarket, let alone a cake made with them. I remember a DTL thread about mayonnaise.

Hi , I am often asked for white eggs or colored as people think they are more costly?
Value for money .
It is amazing how little people know of how eggs are made etc .
They just eat them .
I have to explain about the light ,molting ,broody hens .
Some even said feed them more to get the eggs .
I believe in the last 4-5 years as I have learnt more myself I have passed it on and spread between families and friends .
BHT is doing good with education as that will change peoples views on hens .
Same on animals in general .
Planet and the universe as we know it .
