A chicken keeping lesson.

Post by Meanqueen »

Yesterday I had a trip out to meet two of our chicken keeping members, and to learn a bit about keeping them. These are the pictures I took, sadly I can't remember any names, so maybe Chicken Chaser and Bluebell will will let me know, and I can add them later.

Chicken Chaser's first, she keeps them at the bottom of her garden in a large fenced off area. They have a playground so they can climb, scratch, swing, and shelter from the rain.

The following photo's are Bluebell's chickens, she keeps them on her allotment in three large, joined up, completely enclosed, runs, with sheds for houses.

I enjoyed my day out, thank you for the eggs, I had a couple scrambled for my dinner, they were lovely.

Thanks for the tomatoes and horse muck! My girls would thank you for bringing the grapes if they had any manners :oops:

The gutsy one with her head in the tub (as usual) is Rambo who always demands personal service LOL The rest are Bluebell, Able Mabel(the climber) Geronimo, Hillary,Lucy, Hoppy,Agatha, Zorro etc. The first four are my hybrids and the other 8 are ex-bats from the North London rescue. As you saw, they are very friendly,demanding and greedy.

Glad you had a good day. wasn't Bluebell's allotment set-up nice. have you put your name down for yours yet?

Is the one second from the bottom an ex-batt of unusual colour or bedraggled 'posh' hen?

It's a posh hen that likes roughing it. I'm sure Bluebell will explain.

Hi - it was lovely to meet Jackie and Ilona the other day, shame the weather was so awful.

The hen is actually very bedraggled after having a dust bath in the rain. :shock: She is called Coco, her sister is Chloe (both named after favourite perfumes). Coco looks like she could use a dab. :oops:

Their mum is the little bantam in last photo. Their dad (no longer with us) was a Maran x light sussex.

Thank you both for helping me out with their names, I don't know how you remember them all.

I would recomend that other members see who is the nearest to them, and arrange a meet up, I really enjoyed the day, thanks ladies, oh and Chicken Chaser, and Bluebell. )j;

Ah, I see. It was partly the floppy comb that made me wonder if she was exbat, as I thought that was what they had.

I must say that I always thought that hens with large floppy combs were 'overheating'. Coco has had a large comb since she was quite young. At one time her comb was much larger than her brothers.

I did tell Coco on Saturday morning to keep her frock clean as we were expecting visitors - trust her to show me up!!!! :oops:
