Information and help for keeping Hens in your Garden

Selling Eggs from your Garden Gate

Is it allowed and tips on how to go about it

The problem with keeping Chickens in the Garden as Pets means we sometimes tend to get more of them and this leads to you having eggs surplas to your requirements.
Many people don't need to find homes for their surplas eggs on the gate, many just take them to work with them where they have a keen crowd of colleagues only too pleased to take them home with them. Then there's the neighbours of course

Are you allowed to sells Eggs at your Gate

The answer is yes, as long as you don't have more than 50 Hens (when you have to register with your Local Council) and as long as you're not selling them in a commercial sense.

It is classed as a 'Farm Gate Sales', rather appropriate as I always refer my place to a Garden Farm!

However, there are things you need to be aware of..

1. You should not class your Eggs by size, as in Small, Medium or Large.

2. It is advised not to say they're Free Range, Garden Chickens, Fed organically etc. By saying these things you are relating to Industry Standards leaving yourself open to possible reporting etc.

3. Egg Boxes. This is also a bit loose. I'm sure that many people who know you keep Chickens give you their used Supermarket Boxes. If you use these at the Garden Gate, any refernce to a Shop, Mamnufacturer or Supermarket should be removed. To be extra sure, here's a link to the

Tips on selling your Eggs

1. Don't wash them but carefully clean them if really mucky. Eggs have a protective film around them, once you wash that off it reduces the time they can be stored (eggs should be OK for about 28 days).
I sell Eggs in my workplace and have the selling banter of 'If it hasn't got Poo on them, they're not from down the Lane'!

2. Pricing. To be honest you have a problem if you can't 'undercut' Supermarket prices. As long as you're not out to make a silly profit, if they're £1.50 for half a dozen in the Shops, sell them for £1 or £1.25 max.

3. If you are selling quite a few, make sure you are rotating them by date. Don't put too many outside at once, just one or two days worth. If you don't you could end up forgetting which ones are which (better still, write the date they were hatched in small letters somewhere on or in the box).

There is a fair chance that by doing this you will at least pay for the up-keep of feeding your Chickens. After all, if you have say 10 Hybrids laying 5 eggs a week, that's 50 eggs - if you're a family of 2 grown ups and two kids, that's a lot of eggs to eat!!
