There were millions of shells fired on the Western Front during World War One and being made from brass there is little doubt that many found there way back to the Troops homes after the war was over. Besides decorating Shell Cases, there are various things made from them such as Match Box Holders, Ashtrays and more. Even now, many shells, both live and used are finding there way to the surface. Last week (April 2010) I visited the 'De Akkerwinde' Bed and Breakfast where my son and I stayed in 2009. I asked if anymore had come to the surface recently. They looked at me and said, as if it's a normal occurance, "Yes, some yesterday". It is a normal occurance. |
