Re: Looking for ideas for a chicken coop

Hiya.. the coop looks fabulous, i'd do more research on the twin wall insulated panels - Though it seems a great idea for the winter months and the visible surfaces would be easy to clean, I'd be concerned (once again) about the areas between the panels being ideal for red mite, they can get in to t...

Re: Looking for ideas for a chicken coop

Hiya and welcome Good to see that your're doing your research before jumping in at the deep end ! As has already been said there's no need for a cockerel & if you have children I'd possibly advise against keeping one as they do protect their ladies lol.. You could be lucky and get a laid back fe...

Re: Red Mite strikes!

My son has dusted the hens and everything else inside the run and hut. Not so many red mites last night, and he didn't come in with any on his overalls and hat. Yech... as we all know, its now a matter of not letting up on the war against the dreaded mite - leave it for a couple of weeks or less an...

Re: Foxes and cats

Hi , My cats chase the foxes up the street. I think the foxes know that they cannot afford to get hurt and rather catch mice ,rats and birds . Cats know that the fox will run so fear them little. My Mastiff is scared no terrified of my large cat Darcey . He can scare me at times . Bob

Re: New to chicken keeping

Ooohhh.... Fancy swapping your home for an ex council house with a teeny weeny garden?? You really really need to post some pictures!! It sounds as though your chicks were so young when you got them that they've simply accepted your animals as family lol. I'm sure you'll know your dogs enough to spo...

Re: New to chicken keeping

Hiya... Well it sounds as though the first thing you need is a good strong run, large as possible, to keep your girls safe when you're not watching them & loads of shade.. Also make sure the outside home or coop is well ventilated (ventilation holes covered in fine mesh).. If you have a problem ...

Re: My new bluebells and rir

Unless there's a huge immediate problem with your coop I'd leave it for a bit, you're not going to get a mass onslaught of redmite in the next month or so.. Especially if finances are tight, I'd concentrate on getting the run secure first.. You asked about a stronger mesh... I would advise weld mesh...

Re: My new bluebells and rir

Did you buy the two RIR together? they maybe knew each other, it could well be just that. Remember you've bought hens that were strangers to each other &need to sort themselves into a'flock'.. they'll go through the pecking order thing and you will probably end up with a top hen and some lower r...

Re: My new bluebells and rir

What a lovely little lady looking forward to the other pics X As for the red mite, if you have a wooden coop then believe me you'll end up throwing everything at the blighters lol.. Have a look through old posts, there are bound to be a 'few' on red mite But you're on the right track, just make sure...

Re: My new bluebells and rir

I wouldn't worry too much about exact perch allocation per bird lol .. They tend to squish together anyway.. If you are looking at purchasing a new coop though - I would very seriously consider going for plastic. A small plastic garden shed is easily converted into a really good coop and has the HUG...
