Re: A Second Life

Just a quick update, the wood of the coop has all been treated, and any gaps between joints sealed, I pulled it outside today for a few hours in the torrential rain that's falling here in Powys. A small amount of water came in, and that hole was sealed. We were getting the new chickens today, but wi...

Re: A Second Life

OK, here we go, I have taken some photos over the weekend of the 'mobile' coop I am making from what I can find around the property. Very strange looking coop!! Most of the stuff came from our previous property, e.g. the main structure was originally our old dog kennels. https://www.dropbox.com/s/z0...

Hi Karen, I will do this weekend.

Can I post them here, or will I have to post them in the members coop pictures forum?

A Second Life

Hi all, I've decided to keep this diary, because last year saw my health fail to an almost terminal level, and as a result had to give my chickens and their sumptuous coop to my brother as I couldn't look after them at the time. All through last year I built my health and energy back up to beyond th...

Re: Here we go again!!

Thanks all, The house is just where we wanted it - in the middle of nowhere with a few acres, barn, workshop etc. The heart attack unfortunately was due to genetics, I've never been overweight, never smoked, always ate reasonably healthily, and never been a big drinker. Dear old mum had the same at ...

Re: Some kind of attack?!?!

Hi Mike, yes we do have red kites, quite a few now. I've seen the bird of prey my wife saw close up today through bino's and it is definitely a red kite.

The run now has netting over the top too - lets see the ba*&^%d try and get them now!!

Re: Some kind of attack?!?!

Hi everyone, Unfortunately Fran lost her battle earlier this evening, she put up a bloody good fight right to the end. Both very upset as she was a cheeky little so and so. Still out of pain now I guess. We also think we've identified the culprit - earlier today my wife called from the paddock in a ...

Re: Some kind of attack?!?!

UPDATE 2: Fran is still alive, still eating and drinking, but still leaking a little when she drinks. She is pooping, so some of the food has to be making the right way through her. Checked her today for any infection - touch wood, no sign. Sprayed her with antibacterial spray, all over the damaged ...

Re: Some kind of attack?!?!

HI all, thanks for the responses. Rats regularly visit the area as there is a stream nearby, and they tend to come up for the food, although we now use a rodent proof feeder. They never go into the run until the hens have all gone in (I know this, as I have despatched quite a few with my powerful ai...

Hello all, it's been quite a while since I've been on this forum, what with new home, new job etc and still keeping chickens, horses, dogs, cats etc - it's difficult to find time for anything!! I need some advice from anyone who may have experienced similar! It's not a pretty or happy story, so be w...

Re: DIY Auto door opener - parts list & instructions

Hi There, I moved last year to the country and have increased to 25 birds, so I got myself a commercially produced auto opener (Wells Poultry), to go with my swanky new coop Coincidentally, I have at long last brought the contents of my old garden shed from my brothers to my new shed here in Brecon ...

Purple comb/gasping

Hi all, we have just made the move to an ideal property in the country with an acre pasture that our chickens have a huge area sectioned off by electric net fencing to keep them safe. This morning I noticed 1 of the twins (as we call them) has a different colour comb. Yesterday the comb was as brigh...

Re: Leg issue

Hi Pamela,

I'm just hoping that she will be able to put her weight on it soon. Let me know if try Arnica, and if it helps if you don't mind. I am going to soak her leg in warm water tomorrow and give it a good clean, to see if I have missed anything. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Leg issue

Hi all, my chickens came out of the coop as normal this morning - except 1. Seren, one of the 4 pencil laced wyandotts that I raised from chicks last year is about 24 weeks old. It took quite some work to integrate her and the other 6 newbies into the established 5 I already had. They are approx 3 y...
