My Light Sussex boy is just over a year old now, and does seem to be settling into a routine. None of the hens, large or bantam, seem to enjoy his rather 'brace yourself, dear' approach. But they all have learned to either grin and bear it od get out of his way. (Stiff upper beak?!) None of the ladi...

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you are giving them crushed up eggshells in their food without baking them first?

It has to do with soluble/insoluble calcium. If you don't bake the shells, the chooks can't get what they need out of them.

Steve: When they are that big, buff sussex are HUGE!!!!! I think I would physically be incapable of actually doing it efficiently. My light sussex cockerel's head is almost at my waist.
