Re: Water Kefir Grains

I have no experience of water kefir but I have been culturing my own milk kefir for around five years now. I love it. Fermented, ancient food stuff is so beneficial. Meredith, have just been looking at MILK Kefir info - can you tell me: it says it an aquired taste - which probably means its disgust...

Re: Is it cheaper to make your own bread?

I don't eat a lot of bread but when I do I like to know exactly what's in it. Take a look at the ingredients of a standard loaf of wholemeal bread. I work on the basis that I don't keep such things in my cupboards, so I don't fancy eating them. It all boils down to what you class as bread. Supermark...

Re: chicken boarding in yorkshire

How many chickens? I live near Barnsley and have a spare pen that technically could house six, it's horribly small but if it is only for a short time, it would do.

Re: badly behaved chicken survey.

My naughtiest hen ever was Gwendolyn the leghorn, she is no longer with us but never forgotten. she could scale any fence and was the most fearless little chook. She used to chase Alice the staffie around the garden just because she could. She regularly nicked the cats food and if she wasn't success...

Re: Pet name for chooks

Chook-a-ducks. We used to have ducks as well as hens, so I always ask the dog if we are going to go down to the Chook-a-ducks.

Doesn't sit well with me either.

I am all for recycling but the feed should go to other species, not chickens.

Re: Any one sticking with the fasting regime?

I have been inadvertently fasting for years. I just can't stomach breakfast, so I naturally have an 8 hour feeding window. It works very well for me and I am delighted to find that after all these years of being told that breakfast is THE most important meal, there may be another way and it might ju...

Re: Final Tests

That's great news, Wendy. I always think the worst part of these procedures is waiting for the results and yours couldn't be better.

I am like you, I couldn't be doing with being put under and I decided to grin and bear it too, it's not pleasant but not half as bad as some would make out.

It sounds as if he is his own man. We had a cat like that, way back in the early 70's, when I was a kid. Respect! Do your best for him but at the end of the day, he is free and if he lives life fast, then so be it.

Re: Countryfile and chicken item

They could be doing far worse and that must make them happy.

For anyone who has ever eaten at a fast food place or bought a readymeal or bought cheap chicken legs, this farm is state of the art.

49 days is about bearable, thankfully they don't have to endure any longer.

I've tried a thermometer but I reckon if it looks done, it is done and I don't bother now. So far I have never poisoned anybody.

I thought that it was interesting that they didn't show you the birds as they reached closer to the time of dispatch. That is a showcase farm, most do not reach that standard.

Re: Cat vaccination query

I don't vaccinate my dogs or cats past six years old. If you do a search online, there are plenty of opinions. I take the middle ground.

I have a relative, who is a vet and he doesn't keep up the yearly vaccinations for his pets.

There's nothing like the first time you actually take the top off a hive for the first time on your own is there? Okay, I confess I wasn't entirely on my own it is a joint project with my husband but it was still scary and exhilarating at the same time. I will leave it up to Lenny to answer your que...
