The hens have brainwashed my children!!

My four young children aged 6 5 3 and 2 don't play Mummies and Daddies like children of their age usually do. We have had an entire weekend with them playing chickens!! Please help! They have turned the climbing frame into their henhouse and use a basket as a nesting box. As you can see they adore t...

Let us all know how you get on, i do hope you get those chickens regardless of the council. It is such a learning experience for children, my four children adore their pet hens.

Chalky egg shell.

Yesterday we found a really chalky shelled egg, almost white and rough textured, with a regular circle of shell on one side. For all you experts out there what causes this to happen? Our hens have organic pellets and mash, fresh veg and grit available, so don't think it's calcium related. Any ideas ...

Re: A case of Chickenitis!

This is how tragic my life has become. I have started keeping a record book of times eggs are collected each day and how many, to see if there's a pattern! I love my hens!

Re: Anyone happen to have a spare hen house?

Sorry, but if I had a spare hen house I would be rehoming more ex battery hens myself. Buying a new coop is one of the nicest things you will ever do for your new girls, treat them. Old coops could be infested with red mite. Start new and you'll have complete control.

Re: smelly hens

Yes it's good to reduce the smell of course but my fantastic Haynes Chicken Manual does stress not to be too clean as the chooks need to build up their immunity as too clean means they will pick up infections all too easily. Not to be wrapped in cotton wool! Expose them to a little muck and keep the...

Re: why is one of my hens not laying?

Yes, we didnt expect eggs, just wanted to save the lives of the little poppets. We are in the garden so much more! My husband and I escape to the garden with a bottle of wine and a cheese board when the children have gone to bed and let the chooks out! Romantic eh?
