Re: Coop with a view

Thank you all for the thoughts. They have settled in now and are quite happy on the top perch.

Thanks

Stopping water freezing

Wonder if anyone has any ideas. I have a water hose to my chicken run which feeds a toilet cistern. Out of the cistern comes a pipe with some drippers that the chickens peck at to get water. Things freeze up in the winter. I have a solar panel supplier a car battery which used to power a door opener...

Re: Chicken Training for new coop

Eureka - they all put themselves to bed in the new coop without any input from me.

Clever girls.

Re: Chicken Training for new coop

I went for it. On the second night 2 of the six went in by themselves. So we are making progress. I decided to force it along a bit and just shut off the old coop. I put some of the eggs they laid the day before yesterday into the eggboxes to "show them the way" and today, two of girls used them. So...

Coop with a view

I mentioned on another post that I have recently built a new coop for my flock. It is roughly the same dimensions as the old coop with two perches. The top perch is adajcent to a window and I notice that they are not using it. Do you think they are unsettled by the window and would prefer something ...

Re: Chicken Training for new coop

I think you have the right idea, let them explore it and chose whether to sleep in it. Why do you want them to stop using the old one? Have you other plans for it. I suppose, after they have got used to the new one being there, you could shut the old one in the day and only open it late evening aft...

Chicken Training for new coop

I have recently build my chickens a new coop which is on the other side of their run. I now need to wean then away from their old coop to the new coop. I didnt want to simply shut access to the old coop but thought they might transition over time once they have explored it a few times. Any thoughts ...

Re: Integrating new chickens - when to relax?

This thread is brilliant timing. I am introducing four new birds to three original incumbents. I have split both the run and the coop with separate entrances. I have tried a few introductory swap overs which have generally resulted in hissy fits and scrapping. Thanks to previous threads on this topi...

Re: A guessing game

And just as I was submitting that post a fox came for his nightly sniff. Luckily they are safely locked up in bed in a well built coop.

A guessing game

This post is about how to add new chickens to my flock. I currently have three well sized birds two years old. They have plenty of space so I decided to add a few more birds to the flock. With some clever alterations to their existing accommodation I was able to temporarily split both the run and th...

Re: Cooking oil reuse

Glad you raised that point because it gives me the opportunity to expand on the idea. In my mind I am seeing a device outside the coop and at a safe distance. The device would have a flame which would heat air in a pipe or a metal bar, that would then be fed into the coop to give up its heat. It's a...

Cooking oil reuse

My family seems to generate an awful lot of cooking oil waste. I wondering how I could go about making use of this. I am thinking of using to power a small lamp or heater. Lighting in some vessel and using the heat to provide gentle warmth for my chickens in their coop. Nothing to sophisticated or d...

I can assured you that no Hens get the slightest bit damp. I spray a few yards away from them and they just move on. I realise I might have given the impression of being a brute.

Sudden passing

Sad to get home tonight to find one of Sussex's dead in the floor of the run. The bird was ill some 6 weeks ago and lost all her weight. I was about to do the decent thing but noticed that she was eating and decided to wait. Sure enough she slowly put on weight and continued eating and drinking. She...
