Re: Poo with tiny seed-like bugs ?

thanks both. I don't think the eggs are laid after she has pooed, because it only the poo of one girl. the other poos, and there are a lot of them, are clear of visible eggs. I'll Flub the lot of them once we get the marriages delivery. We clear the run out and scrub the lot down with Jeyes each tim...

Poo with tiny seed-like bugs ?

(I have consulted the poo chart, but saw nothing like this!) One of my girls (am not sure who) has been doing normal looking & smelling solid poos which have tiny seedlike bigs or insect eggs on the surface of the poo. They look like miniscule orange-coloured greenfly, but don't seem to have hea...

Re: Lost my little Daisy

Sad times, tomato. Poor little Daisy. I can understand how you fell. I got home tonight to find one of mine laid out dead on the floor of the Walk-in-Run. :( We think she misjudged flyin down from the high roost in the run. It looks like she broke her neck and one wing, and hopefully died instantly....

Re: Fox attack and new girls

Sorry to hear this Linsi. I lost my two favourite girls on New Year's Day so I can empathise with you. One of our remaining three ladies was shell-shocked and stopped laying. She went into a stress-induced moult and has looked very lost and forlorn over the last few months. Finally we are having a g...

Re: A few weeks in, a few more questions!

Abbilee - it sounds like things are going really well and the clucks have you well trained I don't have much to add but thought I would mentioned how strange my last two new girls were when we got them. They didn't recognise corn or cabbage to begin with - they do now ! they have never taken to the ...

Re: Nest box divider

Ours all slept in a big pile in the one nest box they liked to lay in, so I took out the divider (as per Perchy's suggestion). Then they all kept laying, sleeping and pooing inthe same side of the nest box rather than spreading out a bit. When we got two new girls, we added a new double nest box to ...

Re: Are there companies/induviduals who will look after chic

Hi there, We are taking our birds back to the breeder when we are on holiday. She runs "Hennels" so we will have peace of mind which is really reassuring. For the odd weekend we ask either neighbours or family to pop in, but I've already sussed out some local dogwalking services as a back-...

Re: Whats the one thing you hate about keeping chickens ?

Early morning noise I *would* quite like it, but we are so paranoid about our neighbours complaining and having to get rid of our 4 girls due to their early morning racket. Another thing I didn't like was the guilt during the winter when they had to stay shut inthe small run while I was at work. At ...

I'm also going to start a batch in the greenhouse as my Plan D replacements in case any of the above fail...

Runner beans decimated !!!

After letting the chooks out this morning, I did my usual "seed patrol" - mooching round the veg garden in dressing down, wellies & drinking coffee. Yesterday my lovely strong runner bean seedlings were shooting up a good cm a day, this morning something has decimated them. All rooted ...

Re: Dust Baths - reclucktant users

Two of my four hens took to the dustbath the first morning they went out in the run. Now all four love it, but the first two still spend loads of time in there. We have a plastic recycling crate filled with top soil, sand, diatom and wood ash. I say filled - because I do refill it up regularly, but ...
