Re: Hens about to lay, any signs?

I clean out the poop from the coop (ooh that rhymes!) every day, and there was nothing unusual around. Also didn't see anything like that in the run.

Hens about to lay, any signs?

Can anyone please tell me, do hens go a bit off colour just before they are about to start laying? One of my Point-of-Lay's was a bit down this morning, not wanting to come out of the coop, standing hunched up etc., but by this afternoon, she was looking much perkier and eating again. So, I'm wonder...

Poorly hen, anything I can do myself?

Hi again everyone, I need some advice please. I have had my hens for about 6 weeks now, and until this morning I thought everything was going OK. However, one of my Rhode Rocks didn't want to come out of the coop this morning, and is now standing hunched up and not eating, although she has drunk a l...

Re: Eggceptional Bargain

Before i got my chickens, I would swap strawberry jam with my friend for eggs. She now keeps bees, so hopefully honey instead of eggs.

Re: bewildered new veggie gardener

Oh, thanks for reminding me - I love kale ... must remember to sow some (I prefer to sow in pots and plant out when bigger). Kale is very winter hardy BTW so no need for cloche/fleece when it's cold - in fact, a bit of frost will probably make them sweeter. I would however, suggest you erect net ca...

How can I use my Gh over winter?

I love growing veg, and have been doing it for about 3 years now. In summer I usually grow a variety in my 8 x 12 GH (I have two, but one is a shelter for my Brahmas), but due to the crap spring this year I'm just doing toms. It stands empty and forlorn over winter, so can someone please tell me wha...

Re: Keeping chickens - logistical questions!

Hi and welcome It means that you can let them out into a fox proof run during the day, but only let them free range when you are around to keep an eye on things. There is a video on you tube of a fox trying to get into an eglu coop/run without success. Your washing would be OK as long as it's out of...

Re: change of plan?

I have two 8 x 12 greenhouses, and used to have one of the ebay 6x12 cheapo polytunnels. I say used to, as the first winter we had significant snowfall overnight, it collapsed under the weight and ruined my plants I had overwintered in it. Also, they are much more humid than a greenhouse. I can't co...

How about some kind of raw meat?

I've used your design as a wasp trap in the past, to lure them away from ripening fruit.

Re: Hazel nuts

This year is the first time I've seen Hazels on the trees round here. I've not seen any squirrels this year and usually there are loads in and around our garden. A friend told me there is a virus affecting them. I'm surprised you're having trouble finding sloes, there's loads round here.
