Re: Sweetcorn

Thankfully ours like pears!

We have a tree (or rather floor) full of inedible tiny blush pears (old tree, mainly for perry) and they gibble them up.

Just have to look out for wasps!

Re: Apple Cider Vinegar- WHERE DO I BUY FROM?

Countrywide and other places that sell livestock stuff - it's a staple part of the horsey set's feedstuff!

Even Pets R US (Indoors?) might have some as they now do both horses and chickens (very limited)

Re: Sweetcorn

We've strung some up and they aren't interested!

They demolished the hanging cabbage though!

Odd birds!

Re: Softies and 2 a day

Yes, definitely the sussex. I have caught one of them as it dropped from her vent - I had just opened the ramp and she gave me a softy pressie then went on to lay another later in the day! I have been monitoring who lays what with great interest and the other two lay different sized/coloured eggs fr...

Softies and 2 a day

Could someone just reassure me, please? Our Light Sussex started to lay last week and she seems to be a bit over excited. In the last 5 days she has laid a softy plus a small chalky shelled egg, missed one day, then a softy plus a small chalky shelled egg, a normal but small brown shelled egg and to...

Re: Advice please - can chickens be left home alone?

Shlugh, I'm a fancy ratter too! I am quite used to looking after other peoples matties, but not sure I could leave my chickens.

Then again I have kept matties for 30 years. Chickens only 15 days :-D

Re: Lumpy looking eggshell

Apparently it is very normal to get lumpy shells or shells with wave patterns. Something to do with the chicken being disturbed as the agg was being formed? But I'm new to this too. I am sure an old hand will come along and reassure you, maybe even post some pictures - which is always a relief! Have...

Re: First double yoker !!!

My Magpie missed a day and then gave us a double in a BIG egg! The Blue is still laying little eggs - no doubles yet. The Light Sussex is still laying teeny eggs and her 2nd was a double - so very, very, very small She also lost one at 6am this morning, it dropped straight out of her and onto the ra...

Re: First Bedtime

Play it by ear seems right. We've had ours 2 weeks and 1 day and one of ours lets me know she wants out at about 6am, she seems really loud to me! Ours went to bed fine, but the man who delivered them put them in the box and let them find their own way down the ramp. They even lay their eggs in the ...

Re: advice on some hybrid hens

I'm new to this chicken keeping and, to be honest, we went to the local chicken man and had a look at his hybrids. Then we chose them by colour http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4848549899_e2968be90c_z.jpg Black one is a Magpie Ranger Grey is a Blue Ranger White is a Light Sussex Known collectivel...
