Re: Got a poorly hen again

Is there any possibility that she is not being allowed to eat when in with the other hens? We had a similar problem with Dottie when we brought her in to join our other two. Same symptoms as yours has. We did know that she was being bullied, but on sitting out with them one day, I noticed that she w...

She is very healthy looking, so will leave well alone. Thanks for advice.

Bathing chickens

I know I'm going to appear very dumb, but when bathing a chicken, is any type of shampoo used or just warm water? My Dottie dropped a poo onto her rear end feathers, then rolled about in the dirt. By the time I saw her she had what looked like a hard dry, muddy lump on her. I did remove it with some...

Re: Growing veges in pots

I agree with all advice already given. Last year I grew in pots, tomatoes, cucumber, baby squash and mixed salad leaves. Runner beans could be grown in a pot large enough to put in a wig- wam of canes. I personally wouldn't bother with onions unless spring onions as they are so long growing and not ...

Re: What to do with my pebbled front garden?

You have been given lots of good ideas. Don't forget about alpines. Just make little pockets of compost in your stones and plant. They will creep over the stone, giving you some pretty ground cover. Could be done around flower pots. My front is gravel, a lot finer than you probably have, but things ...

The only time my husband offered to cook, he decided to do a Jamie Oliver instead of something simple. He had no idea of timing, so I had to stand around to tell him what to do. Beans on toast would have been fine! >stir<

Re: Very easy meal this evening

I sometimes like to have what I call a lazy cow day so if I'm doing curry I do a big lot and portion them up like they do in take-aways. Then when I just feel like being lazy I get them out the freezer. They are the same as these dinner for one meals that you pay a lot for and you know whats gone i...

Very easy meal this evening

Having a husband who likes home cooked food, I'm usually pretty busy. However, on sorting out the freezer, I found a large peice of leftover roast pork. This is sliced in a tin and covered in foil ready for reheating. Also ready, baby crushed potatoes, parsnips, butternut squash, and garlic cloves, ...

Re: The stoop

I'm now feeling very relieved as I wasn't sure that we do in fact have a young hen. Dottie hasn't yet laid and there are just signs of her comb growing. Very red and raised. For the last few days, she has been taking herself into the chicken coup by herself and really scraping about in the wood shav...

Re: Noisy Hen

Our cat wakes my husband every morning at around 6.30 for food. He feeds her, lets the hens out, makes a cup of tea and goes back to bed. He doesn't mind, so everyone happy,

The stoop

I am interested to know just what the stoop is. I don't know if my Dottie is doing it.

Thanks in anticipation, am sure I'll get a reply.

Re: Ive had my reward already!!

What a heartwarming letter. I don't have ex bats, just wish I had the room. I can only imagine the pleasure and satisfaction you must get, on changing the life of another creature so drastically. It must be like heaven for them considering the life they have had. I hope they give you much pleasure. ...

Re: What's your tipple?

Not many drinks I don't like. I really enjoy a glass of Merlot rose, which I have each evening while dinner is cooking. Also on occasion, a nice glass of G & T, which I have gone onto after being a scotch drinker for years. As I've got older, the whisky makes me act sillier and makes my face red...
