Re: Big Lump?It could be compacted crop or pendulous crop. Compacted crop would feel firm or even quite hard and pendulous would feel soft and squishy. For compacted crop give them live maggots, they can have plenty without harming them and they love them. It sounds horrible but the maggots break down the matter...
Re: Continuing Strange Tasting Eggs (No longer first)Thank you Jackie. They have been on your pellets since you gave them to me and you are right about the poop. I am now noticing less sloppy poops, just wish the eggs would hurry up and get better!
Continuing Strange Tasting Eggs (No longer first)Sorry to have to start a new thread with this but we have run out of pages and the eggs are technically no longer first eggs. To answer the recent question on the ground they are on, it was a garden area before we had the chickens and I researched which plants were bad for chickens (jasmine didn't c...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsOh Believe me, I am already having a drink or two or more! Husband says we are destined to be the only people to keep chickens just as pets with no eggs as an added bonus. But I have to keep believing that it must get resolved eventually. I said today we will look back at this time and say "rem...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsThe more I have thought about it today (I am consumed by this!) the more I come back to the jasmine and think it may just need more time. The eggs I tasted this morning were Treacle's from yesterday and Bluebells laid first thing this morning. Bluebells egg tasted strongest which I thought odd as it...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsWe tasted both Treacle's and Bluebell's eggs this morning and although perhaps slightly less strong, they are still no where near normal. I was so disappointed. We had shop bought eggs for breakfast yesterday to remind us what eggs should taste like and they were so nice in comparison. I realised ye...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsThe jasmine is out. It was planted in a half tile hole, so quite a small space and was hard to get out. I had to snip some of the roots because they ran under the patio but have planted it in the garden any way as it has two chances and nothing to lose by giving it a try. I tasted Treacle's egg from...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsMe again, sorry to be taking up so much space here at the moment. I have cut down the jasmine so that there is no green left and will have a go at digging it out tomorrow. A while back I dismissed it being likely to be the jasmine as I thought they couldn't reach much of it. Then I realized that the...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsMy husband suggested we try to take it out and move it the garden. The only problem is I planted it five years ago by removing one of the slabs on the patio area and the roots will probably go well underneath the patio or the shed that it was climbing up. We will give it a go though, nothing to lose.
Re: Egg identificationThis is cheating really but I couldn't not know as Treacle's are dark brown and Bluebell's are pale blue. Pepper and Dotty haven't started laying yet but should lay pale brown eggs so that will be the real test, telling then two apart from each other.
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsI have tied The jasmine back with wire because it was getting dark but it is coming out either tomorrow if I have time or Saturday. Can't wait to get rid of it now. Thank you for comments on my blog. The upside of this is having people read my blog and say they like it, that is making me feel better...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsI don't have a sinus problem and both me and my husband get the same taste. Jackian is tasting our eggs later today so should be able to verify this. I have bought eggs today, sadly! I am only feeding pellets, a small amount of corn before bedtime and a small amount of greens. This afternoon when Ja...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsAceface, don't worry about us getting egg bound. We both have one mouthful to taste and then throw the lovely looking golden yolked egg into the bin. We tasted yesterdays egg from Treacle this morning and no change. It's not a hint of woody it's a strong, unpleasant woody taste. I will be glad when ...
Re: Strange taste to the first eggsAceface, thank you for your comment on my blog. "Down the "lane" gets a lot of mentions at the moment! I use mixed oyster shell and grit in a hopper so they can help themselves as needed and the shell on their eggs are super hard. I keep going round and round everything and I am only ...
Re: Naughty Naughty SpiceWhat a priceless picture. They are so funny aren't they. My four girls all know the treats are in the store cabinet and every time I go in there even if it's for gloves to clean up, I have four chickens at my heals just in case it's treats time. But now, Bluebell (smartest girl) jumps in the cabinet...
