Re: rolypoly is gasping, is it a crop thing?

Rolypoly went to the vet yesterday, he agread she probably had a "cold" & gave me baytril & tylan for the water, expecting her to be much better in a few days. However the cold weather has sent her downhill & this morning she was crouching behind the pen gurgling & snufflin...

Re: rolypoly is gasping, is it a crop thing?

Just read livvylangs thread about her hen with a cold, & I've decided to take Rolypoly to the vet tomorrow to be safe. The kids adore her & couldnt bear to lose her. I think the vet will give her antibiotics. I'm also off to Jollys to get some better woodshavings, we had a sackfull provided ...

Re: rolypoly is gasping, is it a crop thing?

I've been watching Rolypoly closely this morning, she's still alert, full of energy & eating well. If her crop was blocked I spose she wouldnt be eating. However I heard a couple of snuffles while she was pecking & she does have what looks like a slight crust on one nostril. Perhaps she has ...

Re: rolypoly is gasping, is it a crop thing?

How long has she been gasping? If you can get a look in her throat to check for gape worm... And it might be a longish strand of grass, or something on it. There is no sign of discharge from eyes or nares? Is the crop abnormally full or average size...I assume it's evening there so it should be ful...

rolypoly is gasping, is it a crop thing?

Hi, dear Rolypoly (buff orpington) sort of gasps every so often, opening her beak really wide. She is still very active & greedy & doesnt appear poorly atall. I wondered if a problem with her crop could be causing this, she's free ranging so does eat alot of grass (but its not that long). Al...

Re: BL**DY PARASITES!!!!!

Hi, sorry I dont speak with the voice of experience as I havent even got my hens yet! But I thought I'd pass this on, the chap that delivered my coop today recommended keeping redmite at bay by lining the bottom of the house with corrugated cardboard, he said lots of the mites will crawl into it, th...

setting up our coop

hello again..........more questions! We've got our coop up. I've been given wood shavings for the main box & straw for the nestbox, are shavings ok to tip on the compost? I've cut some old groundsheet to line the main box to make it easier to clean out, but wasnt sure if I'd need to put any in t...

Re: 3 days to go - a few more questions

If you're planning on using barrier red mite powder .. It's not intended for use in the house only on the birds. So what is the stuff to put in the coop? & is it best to do coop or hens? for prevention that is. I know these hens are mite free now, but there are a couple of chickens nextdoor to ...

Re: the cuddliest chicken!!

sit and talk to them (ok so your neighbours might think you are bonkers but it works). I'm sure our neighbours already know we're bonkers! Actually our chicken obsession started off on holiday at a farm cottage in Cornwall, where there were free range chickens & ducks galore. My son fell in lov...

the cuddliest chicken!!

Hello all you experienced chicken keepers, I have another (rather daft) question. Having now found a nice, locally made henhouse, we are dwelling on which 3 chickens to actually get. Looks like one will be a buff orpy, but my other son cant decide, he wants me to ask you all - which is the most cudd...

do hens mind too much shade?

Hi, we're still preparing to get our hens(shouldnt't be long now!) The place I was about to clear for the run seemed perfect in all ways, except it will only get sun first thing in the morning. We're hoping the chickens can free range alot of the time so it wont matter then, but on days when they ha...

Re: which chooks to choose

one orpington who is gorgeous. She is the only one who has ever gone over the fence Golly! I didnt think an Orpington with those short wings would get that far off the ground! This morning I loaded 6lb of stuff from the cupboard into a bag & handed it to my son so he could imagine cuddling a he...
