The problem is with the soil to firm ,as the roots go down they tend to push the set out of the ground .I like my soil as fluffy as i can get it ,i then use a very narrow trowel just to make an indention for the onion to drop in then as LL says sprinkle the soil around the top .I do net mine keeps O...

Like any fast growing plant Runners need lots of compost and well rotted manure under them .I grow in the same place every year and grow enough to freeze for the winter and spring for 3 families. Put banana skins in with them if in the greenhouse ,next to the plants.Banana skins in the draw with tomatoes brought in from outside may work though never tried it .

Its not cheap that is the problem ,i use pressure treated decking from B&Q when its on offer then get it Wednesday 10% off as well ,i then staple 6in damp course to the inside ,keeps damp soil at bay and stops any leaching ,its been down several years now and still looks ok .

About 1 to 2 inch ,tender and juicy .Better to pick before they get to old as can get tough.
