Hope Nugget goes on all right, and that the trauma is receding.

First day without an egg

Today is the first day that our two remaining girls Lizzie and Lottie have not laid. They have laid consistently since we got them in July, so they have done very well indeed.

Re: homemade poultry feeder

That is really impressive, Steve. We use an old clay plantpot stand, which is very heavy even when empty.

Re: Newbie

Welcome to Down the Lane. As the others have said, a tin with mealworms or maggots works wonders. Mine move like greased lightening if they hear the tin rattle, though at present they are kept in their walk in run (foxes in area).

Re: Garden v chickens

We had our three for a few weeks before we let them loose on the garden. They had to go back in the run before we let our dog out on the same area, and poo pick very carefully. The long back garden quickly became like a bog in November, as we are on a heavy clay soil. When a neighbour two doors away...

I have been giving them much more than less than an eggcupful per bird! Will take heed tomorrow.

Re: Knitting for charity?

Hello rhubarb, just seen your last post. I haven't received a PM from you. The address I send to for Pegasus Childrens Trust is:

118a Bruce Gardens, Inverness, IV3 5BE.

The address used to be a Box number, but the above is the one I now use.

Re: Loss of appetite - moulting?

Lily was moulting slightly. Lottie and Lizzie will go mad for afternoon treats, but it is rare to see their layers pellet dish empty.

I have been giving corn in the afternoon, rather than mealworms, they would kill for both.

Loss of appetite - moulting?

Am I right in thinking that hens loose appetite during a moult? We lost Lily last week, and at first I thought the amount of food left in the dish was due to her greed, but there is food left over each day, despite decreasing the layers pellets. Confession - they do get corn mid afternoon when I tak...

Re: Fox attack :(

Oh Novastar, the fox attack must have been horrific, and your little Boo, what a shocked state she must be in. So sorry that you lost two of your girls. I free ranged mine until a couple of months since when my neighbour who has banties a couple of doors away said he had heard a fox in the early mor...

Re: How much do you spend on weekly groceries?

Today I spent £26 in A....di, mainly basics. Next week we will use Mr T's new shop which opens locally on Monday - going for a nose round, and A.... di as well. I buy loo rolls from F.rm Fo.ds, a lot of the people you see at the tills have bought just them, nothing else!
