Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesI love looking at your photos Sandy. Poor Deirdre does look hot, but I suppose she has a built in feather boa! I don't know how they've been managing in this heat, a couple of mine have been panting away and that's the recently freed ex batts too! One of my girls is moulting too, which is probably v...
Re: My darling top hen Isabella had to leave me todayIt is so sad when they have to go. I'm so sorry to hear about Isabella, she sounds like a marvelous girl and as has been said, her legacy will live long through you now and the work you do for other ex battery hens.
Re: The girls -1Year on.Hi Rebecca
Welcome to the Lane!
Re: Oh no....My Rexie had massive spurs, she was top hen and definitely a girlie even had the eggs to prove it. And a couple of my current girls have little spurs too, like yours. Seems perfectly normal. I'm waiting to see if my new top hen grows spurs to match her new position, because I really don't remember R...
Re: Hot weatherOur cat's been lying on his back with his paws in the air, trying to air out every square inch of himself. The girls haven't been too bad actually, a bit of panting and the occasional spread wings but there's plenty of shady spots round the garden that they like to lie around in. I did pea and sweet...
Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesOh Sandy, what an awful couple of days for you. I am so so sorry to hear about Betty. It's devastating I know. I'm sure the other girls will be there to give you comfort and to help you remember all the lovely and funny things that AJ and Betty did during their time with you. They really don't stay ...
Re: Feeders & DrinkersI use a cut off milk bottle for pellets, and hang it from the wire on the side of the run. It's handy, just make sure the top isn't cut too low otherwise they can scratch their combs as they put their heads in. I also use plastic feeders which I have hanging from hooks. Because I have been integrati...
Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesSandy, I am so sorry to hear about Amanda Jayne - what a loss she will be. Sending you a huge - we all know what it's like to lose the special girlies. Hope Betty pulls through her op okay, I'll keep my fingers crossed that she's back on the mend soon.
Re: Amanda-Jayne is shivering badlyVery sorry to hear Amanda Jayne is under the weather again. I hope she'll be okay
Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesI love reading your diary Sandy and looking at your pics. I am so jealous of your massive run! It's more of a chicken compound really.
Glad to hear your under the weather girls are on the mend. But what have they had their beaks into, to get such filthy faces?
Re: What a plank I am :DHi Kain, Amazing what girls will let you do for a handful of mealworms! We used to keep pigeons and budgies years ago when I was a kid, but I don't remember ever seeing crops as big as my chickens, especially after they've eaten through most of my garden. Glad to hear your girls are settling in well...
Re: Bumble's eggsHi Mike One of my chickens (ex batt) gave up laying last year but still likes to sit in the nest box every day and I've noticed this with my older ex batts to - even though they don't lay any more, it's either a habit they've got into or they just want a bit of peace & quiet in the coop. Cassie ...
Re: Poorly chicken - advice pleaseHi Lisa It's possible that she's having trouble laying - laying softies can really take it out of them. Sometimes a warm bath can help to relax the muscles, and they can pass the softy overnight. I'm not sure about elevating her temperature in this hot weather though, but it might be worth seein if ...
Re: Lonely bullied hen.Hi Orfy if she's free ranging or eating the dog's food (?) then that might be causing the dirty bum - does she have access to pellets or mash, and is she eating it? Possibly stress might be causing her problems too, poor little thing. I would agree with Mad Chick - assuming there are no health probl...
Re: Poorly chicken - advice pleaseHi Lisa You say you've had your chickens for a year - there could be any number of reasons for this, so it's a case of trying to eliminate what the problems could be. When were they wormed last? Has she moulted at all, or are there feathers around the place? Is she still laying? Has she been having ...
