Re: Vegetarianism and health

IMO marmite is fantastic, a food made from the waste products from brewing beer; how can it be wrong?

With you on that :-D And ... there is nothing wrong with the odd bottle of home brew as part of a healthy diet.

Elder Flower Champagne

Opened the first 2 litre bottle last night - it is absolutely lovely. It won't be very alcoholic, I am guessing 1% max, but nice and fizzy with that lovely elder flower perfume. Family and a few friends round for dinner in the garden - pity the weather wasn't warmer for that perfect English summer f...

Re: Warren Vs Rhode Island Red

Mrs Fabindia is not a great lover of poultry. She tells me that she realy doesn't like them, but I have a feeling is that is so she can leave all the looking after to me. She doesn't object to a few lovely fresh eggs I did take her to my local hen supplier a couple of months ago (Durham Hens - an ab...

Re: apple crumble

Apple crumble at our house last two days in a row It a great few months of the year for 'crumble' fruit. I noticed that the rubbarb is looking good (haven't cut any this year yet) and the blackberries are on their way. My cooker apple tree starts with really tart apples but see us through to October...

Re: courgettes

I even tried a few slices raw and it was yummy. Shop bought ones are foul raw! I'm going to be adding some raw to salads from now on

We just use a potato peeler to peel off thin long slices on to salad.

Re: courgettes

I have about 5 courgette plants. I had a glut last year and this year will be much the same.

Found a nice recipe though for courgette curry with chickpeas, but there's a limit to who much of that we can eat. Will end up giving lots away I guess.

Re: Things I will never buy or pay for again.

Yes, hummus is dead easy to make and does taste better than the supermarket bought stuff. :-D If you look at hummus on the suppermarket shelves, you'll lots of slight variations that are dead easy to copy, e.g. with roast vegetables, caramelised onions, etc.

Good luck )t'

Marigolds???

I have a number of marigolds that seem not to flower but simply put out buds that are just seed heads. Am I missing something? Is this odd or does happen with marigolds?

Re: Vegetarianism and health

I was worried that my diet might be deficient in something that I wouldn't notice until it produced an ill effect. But, so far, so good. My ability to run hasn't been effected; still managed 43 miles in one day as part of a 115 mile ultra run over 3 days.

Re: Things I will never buy or pay for again.

The only thing I use tinned veg for is in the caravan, occasionally, as well as powdered mash.

That's where we have used them in the past. A tin of carrots, a tin of peas, instant mash and a can of corned beef. Nostalgia )t'

Vegetarianism and health

I have been vegetarian for the last 6 years or so, and even before that eat relatively little meat. A lot of people seem to think that you can't stay healthy on a vegetarian diet. But my experience is that I remain wonderfully healthy. I am not fanatical about what I eat, but I don't eat any junk fo...

frozen yorkshire puddings
- me too.

Another thing to add to the list; canned vegetables; carrots, potatoes and the like. Who buys that stuff? And, instant mashed potato; we used to have it as part of meals when we were on holidays when I was a kid :-D
