I got some point-of-lay hybrids in September last year. They just started laying nicely, then went into a moult. (the books say they keep laying the first winter, but the dealer hadn't taught them to read) It does start at one end and move along. I remember when one of our cats changed to his winter...

I'd never heard of them. Wiki calls them 'native cats' but the picture has a face more like a mouse (but bigger by the sound of it). Ahhh.

Sugar sandwiches (white bread and butter of course).
I remember taking them as a treat for my packed lunch on our school trip to the Festival of Britain.

It has very high nitrogen, and is said to 'burn' plants.
And a go though the compost heap would kill any germs that you wouldn't want on your salad.
My fruit growing book says that blackcurrants are gross feeders and will tolerate raw chicken manure, which suggests that most things won't.

Other people have said yes to dustfree shavings, no to sawdust. I assume it's the shavings you mean.

Glad you are enjoying them. If they are eating less mash I would guess it's because they are getting enough natural food. The protien in insects instead of soya or whatever is in mash. Quail's egg size is still an egg - I've had one that was smaller than a sparrows egg, with just a speck of white in...

Re: 4 weeks on

I realise that I am taking a gamble that when they are out in the garden they would be vulnerable to a fox, but I have made the decision to let them free range. We have quite good fences and they are contained within the garden. They are never out when we are not at home and when we are here there ...

Sorry if I offended anyone, I think my views have been fairly stated by Richard and Keith. Rats and people are both intelligent and adaptable species, present all over the globe. There are places where we come into conflict, so we take steps to control them, with regret. Either you take the view tha...
