Re: Edwardian Farm

My great aunt who kept a flock of geese used their wings for sweeping the great and hearth. In her scullery she had several of them lying around!

Muddy run

We knew that we were going to get heavy rain, but last night's was torrential, and this morning the run is like a fold yard. We had talked about covering it over during the winter, and decided to make enquiries today about plastic corrugated sheeting. We got the shock of our lives £30 including VAT,...

Re: We are moving!

I have done the DIY moving, and also had the experts to do the job. But we always get landed to move our offspring, who never seem organised, and packed and cleaned, in readiness for the big load to go to the new house. When we ourselves moved to our retirement home, our moving day coincided with my...

Re: How often do you look for red mite, fleas, etc?

I shall have to brace myself to catch them more often then. My OH has to do this for me, as I have not yet got that part of hen keeping sorted! They will let me stroke them for a second or so, and observe at close quarters everything I do. I poo pick three times a day in the run, and clean their roo...

Thank you Helen. We have just powdered the girls, and the coop. Once caught they are very docile.

How often do you look for red mite, fleas, etc?

We have had our girls just over a week. I was talking to another hen keeper yesterday, who told me that she checks over her girls every day. I wonder how often is recommended? I have tried contacting the supplier, but no answer.

Re: How much did you pay for your chickens?

We asked around before getting our girls. One place asked ten pounds for each hen - ex batts who had been free ranging and were well feathered. Another nearby place was asking five pounds for a hen in the same condition. I got ours from a family friend, who chicken farms with free range, and we were...

Re: Newbie query about eggs

Two eggs this morning, very pleased with them. We are unsure which of the three is not laying, will have to monitor them tomorrow.

We each had a boiled egg for lunch, from Tuesdays eggs.

Pea pods for hens?

Just shelled some peas, and am wondering if the girls can have them to eat? Will they be bad for them?

They have turned their noses up at toast and cabbage leaves.
