If I remember correctly, the story is that it was a botched decapitation, and that the jugular vein and the brain stem were left intact, (or something) - he was fed liquid food using an eye-dropper.

When we're getting eggs, we occasionally leave a half-dozen on the neighbour's garden bench for him to find. We're lucky that we have a few people who will help out with the chickens when we're away, but it's nice to have the neighbours on-side, and to know that they don't mind keeping an eye on the...
