Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

Today poor Poppy has started to go downhill. She was looking uncomfortable & lurking in the shadows, very unlike her. I knew it was coming but it made me really sad. I gave her a botty wash & a cuddle and had a think about what to do. I had some antibiotics left from Beany so I've started Po...

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

Very pleased to find we have a big hedgehog visiting the garden, I was afraid we'd inadvertantly killed them along with the rats. Poppy is still lively & hungry and happy, but when I poop pick the coop in the morning what she's left is definately not that of healthy hen & is getting worse. I...

Re: Separating a cockerel

I think officially its recommended 7 hens to a boy. But I found that however many ours have had they stuck to their favourite 1 or 2 girls anyway. Our Bill has 2 old girls at the moment, he doesnt bother them much, but they're very much a happy little group.

Re: Kitty's Gardenning Adventures

i'm beginning to wish I'd left my beans in the greenhouse for another week. They're being blown off the poles & the bottom leaves are scorched from heat/windburn >shrug<
I'm sure they'll recover once the weather settles but its annoying when they were so healthy looking when they went out there.

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

Poppy had her first botty bath yesterday. Her bot was so poopy you could smell her coming & flies were taking an interest. She is still perky & active & eating well but dropping those green or bubbly poops & thinner than she should be, I think she probably has a tumour. Bill has had ...

Lovely photos Karen, interesting effect, somehow more "real" than normal pics, Lottie looks very characterful.

Re: Kitty's Gardenning Adventures

So I protected them from the frost but nearly lost the beans & courgettes from the heat! They started to wilt badly, despite plenty of watering. I put some shade over them today & they started to perk up. The peas, pumpkins & sweetcorn didnt seem to mind the heat, I shall bear this in mi...

Re: Kitty's Gardenning Adventures

Hooray, it looks like the cold, frosty nights are over & I can finally plant out all the things in pots in the greenhouse. The beans are already winding round 4' poles in their pots & the courgettes are hanging over the shelves. The beetroot & chard that I did plant out have mostly been ...

Re: Bees & Weedkiller

Ha ha! All the animals & chickens you can see are actually ornaments. But yes my chickens would be out nearby, they explore the garden, pop in & out the flower beds but rarely ruin anything.

Re: Cucumbers

I used to lose alot of young veg that were in pots in the greenhouse through overwatering, some would rot before germinating. I think after years of trying I've finally got it right as every single one came up this year & all are doing well. I use a smallish water can with a rose & once a da...

Re: Bees & Weedkiller

If I feel the need to remove dandelions from the laws I use one of those long sticks that pulls it out like a plug. This year as the garden centers have been closed I've allowed alot of "weeds" to flower & enjoyed them. Why do our lawns need to look like carpets? This is my main flower...

Bees & Weedkiller

I have just seen a sad post on fb about a young beekeeper who has watched her bees die in front of her for the second year from poisoning. Not from commercial crop spraying, but from local gardenners spraying dandelions with weedkiller while in flower. Dandelions are one of the first forraging plant...

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

Has it really been a year? I was looking at some photos of dear little Lottie yesterday. Giblet has been wanting cuddles alot lately. I hear her crowing in the morning, she often does that when she starts laying & I've found a few squashed/soft/fart eggs over the past week or so. I wish she'd st...

Re: Kitty's Gardenning Adventures

Everything has sprouted, I was thinking of planting out the peas (currently in peat pots in greenhouse) before it rains later today. But I've seen we have some cold nights to come & maybe some frosty nights, so I guess I should hang on a bit longer? Anyone planted any veg out yet?
