Re: Anyone's chickens not like worms? In summer my girls go crazy for worms and I have to be so careful with the fork as they are all over it. In winter when not laying they show no interest at all. I think they know what is good for them for egg production. It is similar with greens. I give greens daily and they can't get enough in sum...
Re: Getting New Girls!!It sounds like it is all going really well.
Re: Getting New Girls!!At the start of my chicken keeping I had a chalkhill blue. She was named by the breeder and did lay blue eggs. I have since had bantam brown leghorns and they looked identical but laid white eggs so I think often these are crosses to give a certain egg colour and are named after where the breeder li...
Re: Getting New Girls!!It will be lovely to add some more girls to your flock. I know integrations can be difficult but it will be worth it when you have your new increased flock. I look forward to hearing how it goes and what girls you get.
Re: Chicken in a treeI agree with Richard. A bantam, breeder, told me that sometimes his birds would roost in a tree and he couldn't get them in. He said that the fox would get them at first light when they came down from the tree. It's always best to get them in if at all possible.
Re: Chicken in a treeHave you checked the coop for red mite as that would stop the girls going in the coop to roost. The other thing that it could be is that they want a higher roost. It may not be much help to you but years ago I had a mix of standard girls and bantams and they too roosted on the coop roof. It became a...
Re: Geese - two unexpected additions! They are growing up fast. They still look adorable though.
Re: How many Chickens have you ? - POLLI started with the recommended 3 and grew to 9. I have 7 at the moment due to losing a couple but I would like to add a few more in the spring. I can't now imagine only having 3 and as the run has grown in size with the number of girls I would always have as many as my space allows. Chicken keeping ...
Re: Worms and worming hensMy powder flubenvet which I buy from my vet comes in a box of 600mg and has a years date on it. I use half of it then the other half six months later so that the box lasts a year. I too, mix it in mash which quickly gets consumed so I know they all get some. I have 7 bantams and put the mash in four...
Re: Broody hen put to good useThey are adorable.
Re: Bullied new henKeep persevering and you will get there. I have had easy integrations, medium integrations and really difficult integrations. It seems to be different every time. You always get there in the end though. I have thought it was never going to work and then it gradually gets better and then as Mo says o...
Re: What do you use on the bottom of the run?My run is roofed with some panels which can be opened on sunny days. I have tried woodchip in the past but I now find the soil is the best option. With constant poop picking the soil level gradually drops and I top it up every now and again with bags of garden compost whenever it's on offer or somet...
Re: Poorly henSo sorry. It is hard every time. At least you didn't have to take her back to the vets and you did your very best for her. Sending you a hug.
Re: Chicken keeping in the summerI too have read that apple cider vinegar should not be given when it is hot. Maybe that is why they don't want the water. I give my girls things like melon that have plenty of moisture and mash so that as well as pellets they are getting some extra water and frozen peas in a little water. They are c...
Re: Mixing different size chickensI have five seramas and two bantams, a game bird and an ancona. I think you have the advantage of your seramas being on home ground and as you say they are feisty and they are also speedy. I introduced the first two seramas to the bigger girls with ease. The bigger girls didn't see them as a threat....
