Partridge chick?

Post by Gwenoakes »

Went in the chicken run after 7p.m. last night just to check they were ok and spotted a very small chick would say only a day or two old running round. It was trying to get to the chickens, but they were pecking it. I popped a paper tissue over it and brought it in the house. No other Partridge about, so not much chance of reuniting with Mum.
Long story short Clare put it up on FB and this morning we have driven half hour to meet someone who has a single Quail chick which is lonely. We met in McD's car park at Long Eaton and she seemed a very caring, loving lady who you can tell is absolutely besotted with any animal. She was very knowledgeable too, so a good outcome.
We have already had an update of them both and they seem very happy together and I am very pleased about this because last night it slept on my chest in bed, well it slept, not too sure I did, but it is pretty cute. We gave it some water by a pipette and scrambled some eggs which it ate with gusto and the rear end is working perfectly well too.
The other day I rescued a Toad from the beaks of the chickens and now am wondering what will be next.

I wasn't quite sure, MO as we have 1" netting on the sides and roof then boards sunk in round the bottom, but then I looked and there are a few very small gaps under the boards beneath the conifers, so may be there.
It is very lucky I did not stand on it.
It has been named Nugget and the Quail is called Kale by the ladies little girl who is seven.

There was no sign of any Partridges, Mo. Not mum, dad or siblings, looked all round the outside of our property and nothing and tbh we have not seen any Partridges about this year. Last year there was mum, dad and babies wandering round, but not this, so have absolutely no idea where it came from.
There is no way anyone could have put it in the run as only entrance into run is in the back garden and one of us would have seen, anyway why would anyone want to do that?

A very sad update about Nugget. The lady who took him/her has messaged Clare today to say that he has passed over to Rainbow Bridge.
Apparently he has been absolutely fine living with the Quail. He was OK this morning and when the lady went to check on them at about lunchtime he was huddled in the corner, so she picked him up as he loved to be cuddled and a couple of minutes later he had died.
They have checked him over and can see no obvious sign of anything wrong outwardly, he was pooing/eating OK and just getting his adult feathers, so it is a bit of a mystery. Maybe it was just not to be that he had a long life. RIP Nugget. {hug}

I sometimes wonder if mother nature knows best, Mo. Perhaps there was a reason that Nugget was left, maybe the mother knew something we did not.

Nature seems very random sometimes. Could be any number of reasons. I'm not sure I'd try to rescue a bald baby bird but if it can run about ...
