mince pie alternatives (vegetarian GF)

Post by Mo »

Our choir served wine /fruit juice and mini mince pies in the interval of the concert. An expensive box of gluten free mince pies was bought, but in the panic of serving a lot of people in a short time they weren't opened. I'm sure there are more vegetarians than Coeliacs anyway.
So can anyone suggest easy to make bites that could be served as a 'free from' option

I don't want to make pastry (never was good at it, and GF would be worse), so wondered what anyone had done.
Not necessarily mincemeat - just a festive 'bite'.
It would have to be really easy before I offered to make some.

I heard about an alternative to Xmas pudding. You get some good ice cream and mix a jar of sweet mincemeat in with it then freeze. Not sure if that would be any help to you as I have not tried it yet, but Terry has and says its nice.
Tell me to be quiet if that is of no use, Mo, but just a thought.

I shan't tell you to be quiet, it does answer the heading of my question, and the wider discussion, but might be a bit messy to serve as a nibble in a concert interval. :-D

I like the mental picture though {rofwl}
Do you think if we keep this going long enough someone will see it who has actually got a favourite recipe?

I am a great fan of ready roll pastry.... and guess what you can buy gluten free now!!!
:)
I've never used gluten free ready roll pastry, I like mine all glutened up :P

This year I did mince pie twists.
A whole pack of ready rolled puff pastry (Lidl's if you are interested :P )
Unrolled, but left on the greaseproof.
A 400ish gram jar of mince meat (again I used Lidl's Deluxe rum and raisin). Spread that over the pastry.
I chopped some tatty apples, ok for cooking but looking past their best. Spread the chunks over the mince meat.
Roll up, Roll up for the greatest show on earth...
Ahem
Roll the pastry from the long side. The greaseproof can help with rolling, just like a swiss roll.
I cut mine into 16. Half way point, then half the halves etc.
Cut the greaseproof in half and transfer the lot onto baking trays. I did 8 on 2 trays (my maths is on point today :P )
I followed the cooking time and temp on the pastry packet and they turned out great :)

Mine cost about £3 for 16 twists, so certainly not bank breaking. I guess gluten free pastry will carry some kind of premium. Is there gluten in mincemeat?

Thanks. That sounds good. What size do they come out (compared with a medium or mini mincepie?) When I read 'twists' I was imagining like twisted cheese straws. Are the like swiss rolls?

Yes you can get mincemeat gluten free and vegetarian - though it usually has suet in. £4 for if you google 'vegetarian mincemeat' but if you read the small print Robertson's at £1 a jar in Tesco's is vegetarian and GF (they don't claim vegan or dairy-free so maybe the 'saturated fat' is butter). I'll now have to google GF rolled pastry.

They end up like a small danish pastry, so ok, a roll more than a twist.
I have some in the freezer still and can take a pic if you want.
I also dusted mine with icing sugar before serving.

Thanks. Just been investigating, Jusroll GF rolled puffpastry is 280 g for £1.5 -£2. How big is your sheet of pastry?
Next year that will be fun to do with my grand-daughter as she is gluten intolerant, and her dad is coeliac.

The other thing I found when searching on-line was a traybake, mincemeat crumble. Half the crumb, then mincemeat, then crumb on top, so I thought I might try that, but might be hard to cut the squares neatly enough to serve to anyone other than family.

Think of using greaseproof paper to help with rolling up reminds me of the first time my mother made swiss roll. She was left wondering how to get the greaseproof paper out!

And my husbands grandmother once gave us an iced sponge cake. She was having eyesight problems and the icing was on top of the greaseproof.

HAHA! to the greaseproof :D
It really does help with the rolling though :)

All I can say is the pastry is as long as the box it comes in, and I guess about 8 inches the other way. 375g (I dug the box out of the recycling :) )

Once I bought some ready made puff pastry that was a solid block, that was a nightmare to roll as neatly as I wanted it, lol.

I am trying to upload an image to a site called Imgur. They do photo hosting, but it's going so slowly.... must be the time of year or something :)

I only once used ready-rolled anything and that was for my daughter's wedding cake. It was the time of the raw egg scare so I didn't want to make my usual royal icing. That came as a circle if I remember right.

Hmm, is the box it comes in longer or shorter?

I've made a crumble cake before. Not GF though. The bottom half had some sort of binder to make it a more traditional cakey consistency.

It's this one
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/129 ... ut-squares" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've made this many times, swapping the toppings for raspberries, or apples for example.

Would certainly work swapping blackberries for mince meat.

I guess gluten free flour is a thing. It's not a dietary consideration I've ever needed to make.
