Welfare of police dogs

Post by Mo »

I've just had an email asking for volunteers
Are you a dog lover with experience in animal welfare?

Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner is currently on the lookout for volunteers to help him ensure police dogs are being treated correctly.

You will make monthly unannounced visits to kennels to observe, comment and report on the conditions in which Cheshire Constabulary’s dogs are housed.

You’ll also have the chance to view dog training sessions and accompany dog handlers and their canine companions out on patrol across Cheshire and North Wales.

It’s part of PCC David Keane’s Police Dog Welfare Scheme which is run through an alliance between Cheshire Constabulary and North Wales Police.

The scheme aims to maintain standards and ensure that training procedures are ethical, humane, transparent and accountable.

For more information or to find out how to apply to become a Police Dog Welfare Visitor in Cheshire please contact Sarah Tilling in the Commissioner’s office, either by calling 01606 364000 or emailing: pcc@cheshire.pnn.police.uk

Sounds a good idea. Wonder if other police forces have them.

I have never heard of it before either, like Wendy.
I think it is a good idea though, letting every dog owner know they have to be accountable no matter who they are or what profession they are in. )like(

Absolutely. It sounds like quite a valuable role. I'd consider doing it if our local force did it.

It looks as if there are schemes in Derbyshire, Bedfordshire / Hertfordshire / Cambridge and Cumbria as well as Cheshire / N Wales.

Wow.
They really made sure everyone knew of this scheme didn't they ?
I move in dog circles and I have never heard of it. I wonder where they get the volunteers from ?

I get emails from neighbourhood alerts, that forwards relevant local messages. You can choose what kind of messages you want to see.

Well your dog circles will know about it now - perhaps they can send you publicity material to take to events.
I agree, it shouldn't depend on a cat lover in Cheshire, publicising it via a chicken forum.
