First bed quilt

Following on from Carol's patchwork thread, I thought I would post an update on the one I am working on. It's my first attempt at a full size bed quilt. I don't normally like taking on projects that are going to take ages to complete, I can easily run out of steam before it's finished.

This is all hand sewn, I find I can get a better finish where four corners meet, and I don't like to keep stop starting with a sewing machine. Hand sewing feels more relaxing as it can be done while I watch catchup programmes on the computer.

I'm going to add one more multi-coloured row then put a plain binding around the edge. All the fabric is pieces I already had, plus a couple of items of clothing I bought for pennies at a car boot sale. It also includes a couple of pillow cases which I have got far too many of. I don't think I will be making any more of these, I have enough bedding already, and I want to move onto other things when this is finished. Too many ideas buzzing around in my head.

That is really lovely and all hand sewn? Gosh, that must have taken you ages!

I only made a couple of small patchwork things for my children when they were little, and I remember the hours spent cutting out hundreds of paper hexagons, then having to repeat the process with the material! Let alone the hours and hours sewing them all together yike*

But the end result is certainly worth it, isn't it?

Ilona, your quilt is lovely. I can imagine the time and effort, since I made one several years ago, with hexagonal shapes. It was hand sewn apart from the borders, and I embroidered my name and the year onto it. I hope you enjoy looking at yours.

Well done on making such a beautiful quilt. I do notice that they are the thing this year, so you have the height of bedroom fashion.

The quilt is finished. There are 625 patchwork squares. The back is a £1 duvet cover bought from a charity shop, in the centre I have sandwiched a candy striped flannelette sheet which I have had for many years. I stitched the binding onto the front with a machine, and hand stitched it to the back. I am pleased with it. It looks nice on the bed, next to the rag rug which I also made.

Beautiful job, Ilona. I also like the rug. Several years ago I got into rag rugs myself. I crocheted them and had a lot of fun. Handwork is pretty darn satisfying.
