Sexing eggs

Post by Mo »

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/22/worlds-first-no-kill-eggs-go-on-sale-in-berlin There is a new test commercially available so factory farms rearing hens as egg layers don't have to kill live cockerel chicks, but can detect them early enough to use those eggs for animal feed.
Can't be bad, though no help to back garden hatchers.

Not heard of that, Mo. Bet it is pretty expensive though, everything is that is 'new' out. It will certainly help to stop the culling though, so hope it takes off.

It's a factory in Berlin that has developed it after protests against the culling of chicks

Noticed too late that the link didn't work as I intended (yet I did what I always do), could some kind mod put it right please.

Thanks.
Now back to the topic of punching a laser hole in an eggshell to test for female hormones in the 8 day old embryo.

I am in shock as I never knew that chicks were shredded live for reptile food, absolutely gobsmacked!!
The test looks great and the outcome is good as far as I can make out re the 98% efficiency. I wonder if coming out of the EU will slow us down in this country in being able us to go this way though.

I suspect that a lot of the Eu regulation on animal welfare, workers rights, environment will also be shredded as 'red tape'.

Yes, that is why vegans don't eat eggs (one reason anyway)
