A Suitable Boy

Post by Mo »

Is anyone watching it? Or has anyone read it. There is a review here
I ploughed through the book - a really long read, but interesting (if somewhat depressing)

No, I didn't watch it.
I thought about it, but it seemed a bit depressing from the read up.
I hope you enjoy it

I don't think I'll watch it either, I tend to only watch things like Countdown and Pointless, prefer my fiction in book form.
I did start to watch the one set in 1914 in Hayfield (where my daughter lives) but only watched one episode. That was obviously going to be depressing too. Could say it had the same theme - rich English nobility making a mess of the lives of others.

The book is extremely large - said to be one of the largest novels in a single volume in English.

I read it while on holiday touring round India and what I did was to tear out and throw away the pages I had read, so the book got progressively lighter! It is a good story though.

The other book by Vikram Seth I have read is 'Two Lives', which is actually a true story of his great uncle, an Indian Medic who lost an arm in the second world war but still went on to practices as a dentist in London, and his great aunt Henny, a German Jew.

Yes it took be a good few bedtimes to read it.
The review I read said they the adaptation was too short for the book.

I didn't watch it either. I watch very few dramas any more as I can't sit and concentrate on them any more. Even when relaxing I have to be doing something else. For people who did watch, it made a change to have something new after constant repeats.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.

I seem to remember that when I read it I found it hard to keep track of the different characters.

I am the same. If I am not knitting or sewing I cannot sit still. So in the end the TV is really just a background noise. {hug}

My background noise is music on yooootoooob. In fact my stereo system is becoming redundant. I no longer play records, tapes, or cd's.

I record TV quizes and radio programmes (mostly classical music) My hifi has speakers in the kitchen and in the dining room so I can watch and eat. But if I'm washing up, cooking or strigging fruit it's the music or whatever's on the radio at the time. An old fashioned way of doing it, but works for me.

Anybody surprised by who she chooses to marry?

I got a different view of Haresh from the TV series compared with how I read him in the book. In the book I imagined him to be quite a go getter, a highly motivated person who made good. I was quite drawn to him. The TV series, however, portrayed him as a bit of a wet in some ways. I'd read the book again but it far too long.
