Saved from the scrap heap

Post by Trev62 »

Saved this table and four chairs from the scrap heap, it is amazing what a few nails, a bit of sandpaper, a sheet of boarding and wood stain can do. Chairs have also now been completed just need some seat cushions. Should last a few years all being well.

Should have done a before and after photo, I will remember that on my next discovery.

Not sure if it is bamboo but it is certainly some form of cane. It had cracked and dried out presumably in the heat but we repaired the cracks with a plaster board filler mixed with glue that smelt similar to the old evostick (not sure if I have spelt that correctly) that you used to get in the UK, it has set solid and took the stain quite well so hopefully it will last.

you have done a really good job on it Trev )like( I have a few pieces of furniture which I will one day revitalise - one is a tall table with a hexagonal top (like you could imagine in a Victorian house with a fern on it) which is not at all fine furniture and has umpteen layers of dark varnish to remove; another might be a 1930s style dressing table that really needs sanding down as the old varnish / shellac (?) falls off every time you touch it. One day, done day LOL

A very 'period' look to it. How old do you reckon it is?

It looks like a modern table and chairs made from some from of cane, I think it had been left outside in the sun and just become faded and brittle causing the splitting of a lot of the cane work.

It looks okay now it has been rescued just need some decent cushions for it which we are searching out now. We have some old cushion covers we may try and adapt for it but busy concreting at present so a job to come back to later.

I love the chair Trev. Looks like a cross between bentwood and cane.

I think you are spot on with that, we have found some old material today so we will make some seat cushions once the garden slows down to give us a bit more time.
