Alstromeria question

Post by Richard »

Hi,

I have some Alstromerias in the garden which have now finished flowering.

My question is.....how can I move them?

In the past I have dug up small plantlets and tried to replant them but as there was no root as such, it failed.

Do they have bulbs or corms? Can't figure it out.

At present they're in the shade and I think they'd be far healthier in a more sunny position.

Many thanks, Richard >mmm<

I think they have swollen roots that are really quite deep down.
Probably the best thing would be to dig down now whilst you can still see the stems and lift a ball of soil. they can be a bit fussy but once established they go on for years.

Thank you.

I'll give the ground where they are a good watering tonight, I'd need a pickaxe after this weather !!

Will post a piccie when I do.

Thanks for the query Richard. I was going to put up the same post. My old neighbour has recently died and I have asked for a bit root of alstromeria just to remember him by. Is now the best time to take it, as I can take it whenever I want, but don't want to damage the rest of the plan it if it is the wrong time of the year.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.
