Bees & Weedkiller

Post by kitla »

I have just seen a sad post on fb about a young beekeeper who has watched her bees die in front of her for the second year from poisoning. Not from commercial crop spraying, but from local gardenners spraying dandelions with weedkiller while in flower. Dandelions are one of the first forraging plants of the year for bees. Her plea is for gardeners - if they must spray them - to pick the flower heads first to avoid harming bees. I personally dont use weedkillers but I thought this was a good message to share. I'm sure most people dont realise what harm they're doing.

If tou are going to pick the heads you hardly need to spray anyway. People want a shortcut

Perhaps we could all use natural remedies as discussed on another post, e.g. salt, vinegar etc.

If I feel the need to remove dandelions from the laws I use one of those long sticks that pulls it out like a plug. This year as the garden centers have been closed I've allowed alot of "weeds" to flower & enjoyed them. Why do our lawns need to look like carpets?
This is my main flower bed this year, most of the flowers are "weeds"

Ha ha! All the animals & chickens you can see are actually ornaments. But yes my chickens would be out nearby, they explore the garden, pop in & out the flower beds but rarely ruin anything.

I have forgetmenots popping up all over the place. And some Granny's Bonnets beside the path (in the cracks)

I let mine grow, they help bees and aerate the soil. What's not to love?

Vegetable growers might say they don't love the multitude of seeds and the long roots that break when you try to get them out. And the way they come up in cracks in the path and survive attempts to get them out.

But they are cheerful and fun ('what's the time?').

Like the overgrown hedges, there are 2 sides to every gardening question - I know full well that left to itself (as my acre mostly is) the wilderness takes over.
Dandelions are very good at surviving, especially in mown grass.
