Lizzie, Lottie and Lily's outing

Post by Spreckly »

This morning we let the girls out for ten minutes, after making a safe area (we hoped), with three tall windbreaks. I stayed inside with a tin of mealworms, and OH took photos of them.

They were quite cautious at first, but loved the grass.

One thing concerns me, we have a lot of clover in our lawn, well clover and weeds, actually, but it is hard wearing. I have read somewhere that clover is not good for hens, please could someone enlighten me.

If they are going to be all right with clover, OH will make me a mobile run - he doesn't know this yet!

Got them back in their run easily with the mealworm tin. Lily went into the nesting box to lay her egg, and their outing was over.

I will get photos on in due course.

Clover should be fine, but not too much - get the squits.

I belive clover is Ok and not harmful, however, I am sure a more experienced chicken expert will let you know for sure. Chickens generally know what and what not to eat, and would probably steer clear of most suspect plants!. )t'

Thank you for your kind comments. The grass is our lawn - no grass in the run after a couple of days! I wear wellies a lot as everything is sopping wet here at present, and my dress/skirt - the top half is an apron, skirt is ancient, but still wearable!

Our lawn is about 80% clover, 10% dandelions, 9% daisies and 1% grass
Our chooks have been fine on it but they only come out about once a week )t'
