Shall I? If so, how (introductions)?

Post by Mo »

I have offered to get my grandson some hens to put in my run (plenty of room for a few more, and an old arc+run that they can be in at first).
He loves collecting eggs but insists that he wants a Daddy.
I keep saying NO.
If he wins are introductions any different. I have 3 black rocks and was thinking of getting a white star and a speckledy so that he could tell who laid which egg. Would you get them at the same time (not sure I can get a boy from my usual supplier). The arc is 3'x3' and has a 3'x6' run.
Any other advice? We are fairly rural, neighbour on one side and across the road, but the run is next to a field.

Are they OK on layers pellets if they don't lay? (and it would be a miracle if they did)

If he wins, and gets a Daddy, will he be expecting babies?

Well mine eat layers and I think most who have roosters do the same because feeding them differently would be virtually impossible...as long as they are fully grown their kidneys are able to process the calcium no probs.

He hasn't said.
And I've only ever had one hen that went broody and that was 10 years ago.
Are they more likely to go broody when there is a cockerel in the run?
