How many Chickens have you ? - POLL

Post by Richard »

As you know, we do this once in a while just to see how many Chickens Members have.

This can include Bantams.

It would also be interesting to write how many you started with and how that's increased, if it has of course.

I started with the recommended 3 and grew to 9. I have 7 at the moment due to losing a couple but I would like to add a few more in the spring. I can't now imagine only having 3 and as the run has grown in size with the number of girls I would always have as many as my space allows. Chicken keeping is very addictive.

We have three hens: Agatha, Betty and Dolly. They are my first experience of having hens, though my husband's family had hens when he was a child. Our girls have been with us since end of April :-D

Interesting.

I like others started with 3 and at one time went up to 35, mainly Ex-Batts but a few posh ones as well !!

I then evolved it down a bit and for the last 5 years it averaged 7.

I started a few years back with 8 ex batts, went for 6 but they talked me into 8. They have all now gone.
We have moved since then so need to build a hen house and then a run and I will have more chooks, but not much room where we are now, so will be limited.

Started with five, rapidly went to ten. We have had a rolling average of @ 20 during the summer months consisting of broilers and young chicks brought in to increase our number of egg layers unfortunately we struck out again this year with most of the young chicks being cockerels, still they are great fun to raise and they keep the freezer full!!!

Oops.... I should not forget to mention our two new geese.

Blimey Sandra !!!!

Mo - I think the 4 must have been in the memory on another poll and I didn't notice it - I've changed it !

Didn't think about the not yets and did have, but it's more about the current numbers.

Hi I would be interested in knowing what the cost of boarding chickens is .
Per chicken? - Per pen -per day/week .
It would give an idea across the country what should be available and rates.

My girls and boys cost me 50-80 pounds a week depending on pens.

I charge £35 a week for a pen and you can put up to 10 chickens in the pen and if its a stay for less than a week its £6 a night per pen with a minimum charge of £20 per stay.
