Hi all, I posted on the poultry health area a few days ago because we were worried about Hetty.
Anyway, took her to the vet this afternoon and we had to have her put to sleep.
She had an infection in her oviduct and was very bunged up with an extremely high temerature, even for a chicken. The vet offered antibiotics but she would never lay again and there might be complications later on if she tried too. So we thought it was only fair to put her out of her misery.
We are so sad and tearful and cannot believe our head hen has gone, she was only 8 months old. The other 3 are none the wiser to all of this, lucky them. Anyway, wanted to let you all know our sad news. Even Point-of-Lay (posh hens) are not straight forward all the time and it is so hard when you become so attached to them....

Oh poor Hetty and poor you BUT she did have freedom, a life, the sun on her face and was very much loved so she was lucky in that respect.
