I've had a really good tidy up in the garden over the last few days, the really cold nights put pay to the beans so picked the last of them yesterday and composted the plants .
But just when I was thinking that soon the garden would be asleep for the winter I spotted these ..

and a couple of days later..

Image

Aren't the autumn raspberries a real treat!! :-D

I grow a lot of perennials in the front garden among the fruit trees and by the time I think about tidying them we are into Winter and I can't summon up the willpower to go out and dig in the cold.. they were starting to get pretty scruffy so the last few days I've got cracking while the sun still has some warmth and dug everything out ..dug over the ground, split the clumps and replanted along with some new perennials .. feeling very pleased with myself :-D

All I have to do now is spread a layer of compost over the ground when everything is dormant and get some manure around the fruit trees( now I can get to them). :-D )t'

Decided to clear out the greenhouse today as I have young perennial plants that need to overwinter in the greenhouse .. There didn't look to be that many tomatoes left ..but surprising isn't it..

Image

will make green tomato chutney out of some of them and leave some to ripen ..so should keep us in tomatoes for a couple of weeks yet. )t'

Also decided to cut the herbs that were left before they start dying back..

Parsley .. washed, de-stalked and now drying out a bit before freezing..

Image

Marjoram and thyme

Image

and what's left of the mint, I've made Mint Jelly ..so this will be frozen for sauces..

Image

Got loads of chives too, but they will have to wait .. enough to do today me thinks. )t'

Had a pleasant hour in the garden this morning ..emptying pots into the compost bin and digging over the raised veg bed. All that left in there now is some curly kale and water cress both of which are still growing well.

Image

I'd missed these, so a nice surprise )grin2(

Image

The new courtyard raised planter is still giving us salad leaves, there are a few beetroot which I shall pull later in the week, also spring onions, chard and herbs.

Image

Don't know how much longer the garden will provide us with home grown, but I honestly can't complain ..it's been a very productive season.. we are still having tomatoes too, the last of which are ripening on the worktop. )t'

Jannie I've just discovered your diary and read through it. Your garden is amazing i am envy}} . I would love to do more with my garden but have to admit it scares me a bit, I don't know where to start! I might try a couple of things next year and look on here for advice. I wouldn't mind growing some potatoes and maybe some carrots as starters, what do you think for a novice? I haven't got much space but I think I'm going to just have to 'bite the bullet' and go for it!
