Homemade's Growing Year 2013

Post by Homemade »

Been out in the allotment today.
Hubby has been digging as it is finally dry -ish.

The garlic is growing nicely.

I have planted a dozen strawberry plants on a raised border. Used runners from some plants in the garden.

And I have treated myself to 2 new Gooseberry bushes and 3 new Blackcurrant bushes. Brought them mail order and had them earthed in since before xmas. Today I have planted them in the house garden in the border where we used to grow the runner beans pre allotment. The soil is fantastic, light and well drained from years as a veg border so fingers crossed for a good crop next year.

And this morning we went to wilks and brought seeds. The three for two offer is on. Being frugal we brought three of a price each and then went back in for more as otherwise the till only gives you the very cheapest - when some seeds are £3 and others
40p that makes a big difference!

Early broad beans are just coming up under a fleece.
The seed potatoes are chitting in the conservatory.
Hubby has finished digging the allotment.

I will wait another week or two before starting any seeds off but it really feels as if another year is starting.

Well that was a false start!

Did get some broad bean and mangetout peas started in paper pots in the cold greenhouse.
Some early potatoes in pots in there too.
The tomato seedlings are struggling in the conservatory. Haven't sown anything else because of the weather.

Today the sun shone and the forcast is finally for the frosts to stop. The hawthorn is not in leaf yet though so no sowing out on the allotment yet.
We did go and plant out the beans and peas today and gave the strawberry and rhubarb plants a feed and water.

Fingers crossed for a bit of spring weather.

Finally a break in the bitter cold!

Hubby has got the early potatoes, shallots, carrots and onion sets in on the allotment. With fleece covers.

I have sown more toms and chillies.

Today I have been bold and sown the April / May seeds in the conservatory, ie beans, courgettes, salad onions, lettuce, sweetcorn etc. Hoping that it doesn't revert to cold weather and we can get them out fairly promptly with some protection in mid/ late May. If this works we will be nearly back on schedule for the year.
And the early tomatoes have picked up enough to pot on.

Ooh you're brave.

It's blowing a gale here so I may have to run to the greenhouse and try and catch up with you :-D

And today we have planted all the main crop spuds. The allotment is very wet but hubby wants to earth them up later rather than at planting so we just popped them in and he can go back later when the soil is drier to do that.

Sorry not posted for a month, it's been working all hours here at the moment.
We have done loads on the allotment, put some things out early and only lost a couple of cucumber plants to the frost this week. I have some spares still in the greenhouse so no problem.
Rather than write a huge list here are some photos, It's doing really well considering the cold spell and last year we hadn't planted anything yet.
