A really nice salad

I am really sorry, but I forgot to take a photo :oops: but I made the most visually pleasing salad I have ever made a couple of days ago!! Even I was impressed! {rofwl}

It was.....mixed leaves, red and yellow toms, red onion, cucumber, torn basil leaves, green olives, red pepper and an assortment of violet/yellow and deep purple viola flowers. I served it with a blood orange balsamic vinegar (bought from a local farm shop) and a moussaka and garlic ciabatta.

Followed by homemade steamed jam sponge and custard and served with homemade rhubarb wine.

I love putting flowers in salads - my children all get madly excited about it as well - sadly both my boys eat all the nasturtium flowers straight off the plant, long before they make it to the salad bowl!

I went to a friend's house the other day and had chive flowers in a salad (competitive - moi?) and they were lovely (hope they were edible {rofwl}) and I have to say the violas did add a certain je ne sais crois to the dish.

I will certainly use them again, especially as I have them in my tubs on the doorstep +f+

Borage flowers in ice cubes for summer drinks is my favourite- so easy, but everyone is always soooo impressed +f+

Funny you should say that - when I was a young woman, I always fancied doing an ice bowl that I saw in a magazine. You get two bowls, one inside the other, and pop a little water in between them and freeze. Then add a little more insertin herbs/floers, then freeze again, then add more/freeze and again until you have a full bowl shape.

Then you turn it out just before serving with salad or fruit......I have never tried it but it sounded great

ooh- we did those at New Year, and made ice-lanterns - all along the edges of the path for our party :-D They looked amazing - but no-one took any pictures )gr:

The lanterns sound a brilliant idea - did they melt really quickly?

Sounds lovely Helen. Salad's are much underrated and the best bit is... as you've had a salad, you can have double pudding )grin2(

Must admit, eating flowers scares me a bit, I just can't get my head around it. Although we are growing electric daisies this year as I got fed up of Izzy nagging me :-D

They lasted surprisingly well, especially as it wasn't particularly cold at New Year. I think we put them out at about six, and they were still clinging on by midnight - melting gradually, but they look pretty as they melt.

Not really sure yet as they are still wee little seedlings but the packet of seeds looked fun...
