3 silkie hens and a cockeral needing a new home

we took these in some time ago as their owner was moving abroad. At the time we had RIRs as well. These have all gone now (old age) and we need to start a new flock for eggs for our holiday guests as we have holiday accommodation here. The silkies do not lay that well as they are broody quite often ...

Re: moving gooseberry bush

Thanks for that info. That also explains why it has done so well where it is as it is quite poor soill really compared with the rest of the garden.

Re: moving gooseberry bush

The land it's going on is where the chickens used to have their bit of rough grazing land. We had 10 chickens on it for about 2 years and have moved them further up the garden now. do you think that it would be Ok or are you saying that there could be too much manure in the soil for good gooseberries?

moving gooseberry bush

I'm so glad I found this part of the forum!! My next question is: I want to move my gooseberry bush I only have the one and I'm establishing a new veg/fruit section of the garden so want to transplant the bush to it. When is the best time to move it and should I trim it before moving? It has made a ...

hazel producing nuts

we have a twisted hazel, a lovely tree several years old. This year, for the first time it's produced nuts. I was trimming it when I noticed and realised I had already taken some off! I've put those on a sunny window ledge and they are going brown. My question is, will they be OK to eat when they hav...

Re: Have you thinned your plums?

Our Victoria plum is 3 years old. Last year we had a handful of plums but this year I've picked 20 kilo of beautiful plums off it and there are still some beauties hanging. I did thin after the June drop and took twice, if not more, off. I'm so excited. I've given loads away to neighbours and friend...

2 handsome passive silkie cockerels needing a new homw

About 6 months ago we took in 4 silkies, 2 cockerels and 2 hens. The cockerels have been great, they are great pals and not at all aggressive. We've always kept RIR's, just hens, for their eggs, but have lots of space so thought we would do the person who wanted them gone a favour and be able to giv...

Re: how to get them to free range

Thought I would post an update. We decided on the 'chuck them out' plan and they were in chicken heaven! they loved the long grass and seed heads in their part of the field but then managed to get through into the adults part. We hovered but there was no chasing they all seemed to settle well to bei...

Re: how to get them to free range

Thanks Steve, They would be separate from the adult birds but will be able to see them as it's just a chicken wire fence between the 2 areas. I think we will try chucking them out we're just worried that they won't be able to find their way back in tonight.

how to get them to free range

we have 6 week old silkie chicks. We've kept them separate from the other hens (Silkies and RIRs) in a small pen inside their large enclosure/field. The mother hen has been 'cooped up' with them until about a week ago when we opened the door to let them free range on an area we had fenced off for th...
