thanks guys n girls for the reponses, yes I see the error in my ways now, did it the middle of the day, and didn't warm them up first, also I put them directly under the hen, she wasn't happy with me at the time, trumpeting her displeasure.
I'll try again next year.

Hi there, I've had a fish around, bathed her bottom in warm water for 15 mins, I don't know what to expect , and I don't want to prod or tug the wrong bits, how robust are they?, how far up will the egg be?, she doesn't seem to be in too much discomfort, when I am examining her.
