Noisy cockerel

hiya I have a rather beautiful (IMO) cotswold legbar cockerel that i hatched last year along with some girls. I'd love to keep him but don't want to fall out with my neighbours and he is very vocal. During the day is fine as we have road noise but is there any way I can keep him quiet at night until...

Re: Sexing Ducks?

does this go for runners as well? And how old are they when they are "mature?"

I've got four and have no idea whether i've got mummies, daddies or a mix!

Re: best place for a greenhouse?

Many thanks, I have quite a long garden one side of which gets more sun than the other due to the fence. I'll stick it on the side that gets the most...on the subject of greenhouses I don't want to pay a fortune so any recommendations at the cheaper end of the market?

best place for a greenhouse?

I am upping my game this year and new green house is on the cards, I am wondering where is the best place to site it, it might sound like a daft question but is it better in direct sun or will this fry the plants? Is it better to have it in partial shade?

Sorry for the thicko questions.

ash from my woodburner can I compost it?

Hi I have a woodburner on which I mainly burn wood but also some coal to keep it ticking over. I don't know if I can put the ash on my compost or if the coal won't be good for it?

I am currently chucking it in the bin but would rather recycle it!

What to plant now?

What can I plant in September?

Looking on the gardener's world website there seems to be quite a lot - looking at the seed packets in the shop not much at all.

I would be planting outside - I only have one of those little plastic greenhouse jobs and at the moment it is keeping my logs dry :)

Re: Bulbs

Just as an update, in the end I slit planted them - have both a short and long bulb planter but the soil was too hard. I didn't expect much but acctually got a lovely display of tulips and daffs. Not sure that the crocus made it, but might get some next year? Anyhow, not bad for 49p a packet, will d...

Re: best way to thin beetroot?

Just nip the leaves off with your nails when they're small [if you're going to thin] instead of pulling them up as it doesn't disturb the roots of the ones yo want to grow. I've seen them growing together without thinning, say 4 or 5 in a bunch but they will e smaller. Leeks will come up like blade...

best way to thin beetroot?

OK first year of this vege growing lark, got a nice row of beetroot plants coming through but I have obviously sown them far too thick - I know I need to thin them out but how to do it? Do I just lift them and re-plant them at proper intevals (and can I pot the spare seedlings up to give to my frien...

Re: Any suggestions - what can I use for gabion basket?

Update. Well after much googling and discovering that the smaller baskets I could have bought although still pricey were all sold out at b&q I decided to have a go with some chicken wire. I figured if I make them reasonably small then they should be fairly stable and also I found a trick on one ...

Re: Any suggestions - what can I use for gabion basket?

depends how high you want to terrace. Could you build a dry-stone wall? I could have a go, but the rocks are all different shapes and sizes and I am don't really have the skills...although I did do some a very very long time ago for the BTCV. I would think that would be far more likely to fall down.

Re: Any suggestions - what can I use for gabion basket?

I'm not sure you should skimp on cost when rocks and children are involved, those metal cages look heavy duty and for good reason. I wouldn't risk doing a home made job, better safe than sorry. I appreciate that but I have also looked at some which are just made from what looks like chicken mesh! A...

Lucky you - you wouldn't have got it for nothing at our tip - the men would have taken it and then "sold" it to you.

Any suggestions - what can I use for gabion basket?

Hi, I have tons (no joke) of stone in the back of my garden that I am trying to terrace so that the kids can play. I have seen the wire basket (gabion) arrangement where you just fill them with stone and stack them up - great thinks I - until I see how expensive they are...anyone either made these o...
