Re: Due to have chicks any day now

Hi, The 2 chicks are happily running around the nest box and feeding when mum shows them. I have a couple of pics which i will upload. There are no more chicks hatched and my husband was wondering if cracking the egg shell would help to encourage hatching and to check if still alive as they are over...

Re: Due to have chicks any day now

The 2 chicks seem to be doing well. The other 3 eggs haven't hatched yet. Is there anything we can do?

Re: Due to have chicks any day now

Hi all,

We made a new nest box with separate run on the weekend and we had 2 chicks hatch yesterday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. No sign from the other 3 yet but fingers crossed they will hatch overnight.

Re: Due to have chicks any day now

Whoah, 16 weeks, looks like our hen loses her free ranging then and will be confined to a run - poor little hunny. Didn't realise that as someone at my allotment did this with a broody hen and he kept them together. We also had chicks on the island I manage and they weren't kept apart from the flock...

Re: Due to have chicks any day now

Thanks Stace, we have the perfect wooden box to keep her in, until they hatch so will gently move her and the eggs tomorrow and bring them into our utility room. Then we will build another nest box and run separate to the others. At what ages would it be safe to allow the chicks to be introduced to ...

Due to have chicks any day now

Hi, We had a broody hen and so we bought some fertilised eggs. That was about 19 days ago. Today we found a dead chick in the nest so the others must be due soon. We are concerned about the other chicks that hatch. The hen and the eggs are in a nest box in the main coop with 3 other hens. Will the c...

Hi, thanks. They have oyster grit and layers pellets but they don't seem to eat the oyster shell so I may try crushing into a bit more of a powder. She is an Isa Brown bought from a local poultry farm with 2 others just 2 weeks before they were ready to lay and we have had them for about 8weeks now....

Sick hen ``

Hi, During the past 10 days we have found a number of unformed eggs that were just in the membrane. Yesterday I found some membrane filled with fluid but couldn't call it an egg and then yesterday I found an egg as if it had been cracked open on the lawn. This evening when my partner got home and we...

Mc Queen and Pals first Egg

Yey, our first egg. Laid on Tuesday on our mat outside the back door. I think it was henrietta because I was looking down at them from the upstairs window to see how they were enjoying the snow and only rosie and mcQueen were there so as I called, Henrietta came shooting out of the nest box and acr...

Hi all, Following my frantic first night as a mother hen a couple of weeks ago, everything has been fabulous. The girls: Mc Queen, Rosie and Henrietta appear to be enjoying life 'free range'. We have never felt so loved...everytime they spot us in the house they come running across the lawn , onto t...

Hi All Thank you so much. I am really enjoying them so haven't been scared off! We are fortunate that our next door neighbour used to to have hens in his back garden and has offered to look after them any time we are away. Maybe McQueen could sense an experienced hen keeper!! We kept them in for 24 ...
