Re: Ash and charcoal - what will grow?

Thanks Bill - I haven't got the compost yet and I know I can get my hands on some horse muck so I might top up with that and leave it to do its thing. Shame really, was hoping to move my rhubarb into that bed as I need to split a few crowns.

Thanks again for the advice :)

Ash and charcoal - what will grow?

Afternoon all - after a morning of clearing the veggie patch I thought I would have a five minute sit down and ask some advice from the experts! Is there a veg that would be happy in a bed of a third old chicken bedding (straw and sawdust), a third charcoal and ash and a third compost? Am I right in...

Re: Autumnal Jobs - Getting ready for Winter

Planned for the weekend: - Cut down all the old plants from the veggie patch and give to chickens / put in green bin - Build a small pot shed to store tools and seed trays in over winter from the wood from the old chicken shed. - Cut up the rest of the shed wood and burn, so hopefully a marshmallow ...

Re: What is Saving September

We shop at Aldi as its in the same place as the other supermarkets and it is cheaper as long as you are not a brand fan. The prices have been going up gradually but my weekly shop (3 adults & a teenager) dropped from around £100 per week give or take a bit to £40 or £50. Now that could be down t...

Re: Ever had attacks from above ?

I've seen one swoop into the run but it had to pull up to prevent itself hitting the fence on the way out. I think it is a sparrow hawk as I have seen it take a bird out of the air and land in the garden next door to have its dinner. It was when we had young bantams so probably just about the right ...

Re: Disposing of dead chickens?

I am firmly on the soft side of the fence - all of the chickens that have died have been buried in the run so they are still close to the ones still alive. Saying that, all of the kids pets are also buried in the garden - thats about 30 g-pigs, a couple of rabbits, a couple of dogs, hamsters and a c...

Re: Pallets (or other) for raised beds

Some people collect shoes, your daughter seems to go for nail varnish. There surely can't be that many colours. I didn't think so either Mo, but I was obviously wrong but once you through in the matt finish, the gloss finish, the glitter, the gel......you know where I am going. You have been busy -...

Re: Pallets (or other) for raised beds

Thanks Richard - I enjoy tinkering over a weekend, even better if something useful comes out at the end of the day!

I keep meaning to record something being made and maybe put some plans together so I can remember the next time round, but to date - nothing like that has happened!

Re: Pallets (or other) for raised beds

Apologies if this is a bit image heavy but here are a few photos I have on my instagram, will grab a few more in the morning from the phone. Love messing with pallets - they may not be the most refined results but I am chuffed with them: My daughters nail varnish shelf after a LOT of sanding!: https...

Re: Pallets (or other) for raised beds

Sorry for digging this thread up but have to say that pallets are brilliant - I have made my raised beds from them, the new chicken house internals and floor, bug boxes, bird boxes, shelves and made my own fruit boxes from them (especially good for birthdays and Christmas instead of wrapping paper!)...

Re: Does anyone not free-range their chickens?

We used to let ours wander round the garden (when there were only 4!) but due to the dog coming home and the OH flowers being eaten they were fenced off at the bottom of the garden. Inside there they have a closed in run that is opened up all day so they can wander around the fenced off bit to their...

Re: How much greens should i feed my hens?

Mine get greens quite a lot - mainly any scraps after dinner or the leaves from cabbages, lettuces or whatever else has been marked down to stupid prices at supermarkets (after we have had what we want first!)

They do go mad when they hear me walking out of the back door rattling a bag!!

Re: It was an accident

Awww they look cool - not sure if its the breed, but the milliefleurs I have are the friendliest chickens ever. I have one that is the boys 'favourite' - Sinaed (as in the bold singer ;)), and whenever you step through the gate she is by your feet. If you sit down, she is on your knee. Very pretty l...
