Re: Weeding in my Fruit BedWait until the plants are dormant.(winter) Carefully remove them with roots attached. Dig over the area, removing all trace of weeds. Incorporate manure/compost into the soil and after fruit trees have been replanted put down a 3" mulch. Replant fruit trees to the previous depth. (also scatter ...
Re: What's all this stuff on my tree? Manda, since you are an expert, can you tell me about the stuff on my tree too. It's a crab apple - taller than the garage. Last winter Jim took out all the little side shoots, so now there is a clean stem of 8' or more. Except it's not clean - it has a whiteish/grey sticky stuff on all little bobb...
Re: Ivy Killer wanted"and at nearly 3x the recommended dosage and the Ivy just laughed at me like this "
Try the normal dose, it works for me maybe it will need 2 or 3 hits over a couple of months and in the evening, but it works.(with a small drop of detergent)
Re: Meet Smartie and JellytotGorgeous springs to mind.
I am sure they will be on their feet in a few days (and they will be keeping you on yours )
Re: Carrot Fly Protection "Good news is they fly low and fairly horizontal, so a good screen around prevents them laying their eggs on your plants." If the above statement is correct, I assume they are able to fly through, or navigate around houses, fences, hedges etc ? Don't forget the wind might carry them over ...

Re: Fertile eggs with no cockerel? I happened to post on fb about our granddaughter asking us if our hen's eggs would hatch if we left them. I tried to explain, as well as I could to a 6yr old, that as we don't have any male chickens that wasn't possible. Then someone on fb told me that I was wrong and that hens don't need a cockere...

Re: Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb .....Sorry
3 Rhubarb crumbles and plenty of stewed with custard and plenty more growing but I love the stuff so non spare from 5 crowns. Helen, I still haven't bottled the 2 gall from a couple of years ago. Just reminded me, I must pull some for Sunday.
Re: Vine weevilIn hind site, I think that it is Vine Weevil as chafer grubs look like something out of alien (last one I dug up was 2" long , once seen, never forgotten) cutworms tend to work on or just below the surface of the soil.
In my experience Vine weevil larvae have brown heads and creamy bodies.
Re: Vine weevil"I should add that the critter I scooped out from under the affected plant was a grub type creature and not an adult weevil, a larvae I assume."
All three that I have mentioned are all soil living larvae of various creatures. We learn by our mistakes
Re: Vine weevil"I pulled it and it was not attached to the rootball any more" Sounds like Vine Weevil , could be Cutworm or Chafer grub though. Have a shufty through the compost and see what you find Or get a container of clean water, remove a couple of your plants and drown the roots for 12 ish hours, i...
Re: Chickens breathing smoke fumesIt is not illegal to have an occasional bonfire (1 a month or thereabouts, if it is more frequent it could be a nuisance) but it is illegal to pollute the atmosphere. That was my councils view last year anyway, so I burnt the letter they sent. I couldn't work it out either. My Cluckies showed no ill...
Re: Stoat attack?I think 2" chicken wire is just asking for trouble.
You should be okay with 1" weld mesh, better with 1/2" x 1" but 1" should be okay as it is also a lot stronger than chicken wire. |
