Re: Allotment Closures - shocking !

I can see were your all coming from, however, once being a town councillor and an allotment secretary I can see the point from both sides. In Gainsborough, (a small market town) we had 11 allotment sites (1981). Only one of those sites was full, the others being partly used. The site I was secretary...

Re: greenhouse

I built one a few years ago. The frame was 2X3 with a 1X1 beading round the inside of each glass section. The glass, I collected old double glazing windows from the local builder for nothing and cut through the rubber i.e. two good glass panes held in place with nails knocked into the 2X3. In total ...

Re: Rhubarb question

If you’re growing rhubarb, then you have got a good source of insect repellant. I boil up the leaves and then strained the liquid into a bottle and dilute it 50/50 and sprayed my brassicas with the solution and it helped to keep the white fly and other pests at bay.

Another poem about logs. LOGS Oak logs will warm you well. That are old and dry; Logs of pine will sweetly smell But sparks will fly. Birch-logs will burn too fast, Chestnuts scarce at all; Hawthorne-logs are good to last Cut them in the fall. Holly-logs will burn like wax, You may burn them green E...

Re: A daft question, please dont laugh

Got 8 rescued hens on Saturday and placed then in the run. For the first hour they stood looking at each other, then one moved into my greenhouse where the food and water is kept and started to have a dust bath. Within minutes the rest followed. To night they all went into the coop so I didn’t have ...

Hi Chicken drumstick, don’t worry too much about the eggs at the moment. The first thing is that the girls would have been in shock at seeing the sky and open space for the first time, plus they will be been putting a lot of their energy into new feathers and getting ready for winter. The stress wil...

Hi Richard, been off site for ages with head down and fingers typing away writing and editing a play about the River Trent with 10 other writers, The play has been performed in 10 village halls along the Trent from Newark to Gainsborough. Plus I’ve been writing a new story of my own. I now have a li...

Re: Anyone write poetry?

Hi folks, not been on site for a long time. I’m pleased to say that the anthology I did for the orphanage in Bulgaria raised a few pound. The money went towards the children so they could go on a holiday to the black sea coast. By all accounts, they had a great time. Here’s another follow up to one ...

Grow your own Willow Trees The Willow will grow about 6ft (2m) a year and can be grown from planting the cuttings into the ground. Their final height will be about 20ft (3.5m). If you have space for four rows of ten trees 3ft (1.3m) apart, after three years you will never have to buy wood for the fi...

Re: GM food. Do you care?

We’ve been eating GM foods for over 100 years. The true carrot is purple in colour and not red. There was only two or three types of cabbage now there‘s about 40. Potatoes have been modified and walkers had their own potatoes made just to make a better fried crisp. I could go on and on, but over the...

Albertajune, The chap I’m teaching at the moment goes to pieces when someone is watching. I keep telling him that golf is a mental game and you should only think about what you are doing and nothing else. His wife on the other hand is not bothered by anything. Richard, 92 is a very good round. At th...

NASA shows a picture every day on this site http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html"

It’s worth having a look. I’ve looked every day for the last 4 years and you can always go back into the archives which is at the bottom of the page.

I'd love to try my hand at golf I think, but having had a lesson when we were on holidaybobs in Grenada, I don't think I'd be much good! I had a hard enough time even hitting the darn ball thingymejig! Quite enjoyed it though. Maybe one day hey. Hubbly plays every now and then. Does anyone else pla...

Re: Cooking oil reuse

Is your coop very large for the number of hens that you keep a.leccy ? It's not normally a requirement to add extra heat even in the coldest of winter nights , they have amazing capability for keeping themselves cosy, I would worry in case extra heat could be to their detriment. If they have plenty...
